Probably the single most useful free program is Libre Office, a free version of MIcrosoft Office. It has a word processor, a spreadsheet, a presentation program like Microsoft Powerpoint, etc. All free, and updated from time to time.

VLC player is the best free media player. It plays a wider variety of formats than Windows Media Player.

7-Zip is a good compressor/decompressor for ZIP and RAR files, if you use those.

I like Mozilla Firefox for web browsing. Others like Google Chrome. The browser that comes with Windows, Internet Explorer is also actually pretty good.

Then there's Skype, of course. Everyone uses Skype for text chat, voice chat, etc.

There are a lot more free programs to do things if you want to do them. Audacity for editing audio. GIMP for editing photos, GrabIt for downloading Usenet binaries, Daemon Tools for mounting ISO files, Exact Audio Copy for ripping CDs, etc. etc. It all depends on what you want to do, how you plan to use your PC.
