If your virus/spyware free, there are a couple things you can do get your computer working faster. If you using your computer for normal stuff and not gaming. You don't always need more RAM you just need to perform a few maintenance task.

First, if you haven't cleaned your registry in a while. This is necessary. Your registry holds all the information regarding updates, installs, un-installs etc. Each one of those events produces a key. That key needs your PC's resources and free space. So, if you clean your registry, you make more resources available for speed. Do a registry scan if you got more than 20 errors you should clean it.

2. Clear your Windows cache files, this is your temporary file. It can grow up to a large volume and stop your computer from using RAM properly. In a sense slow it down by preventing it from using free space. Here is how:

1. Quit Internet Explorer, Firefox, or any other web browser

2. Click Start, click "Control Panel", and then double-click "Internet Options".

3. On the General tab, click "Delete Files" under Temporary Internet Files.

4. In the Delete Files dialog box, click to select the "Delete all offline content" check box , and then click OK.

5. Click OK.

3. Manage your startups. Your excess CPU usage is due to too many programs running in the background. You can cut these to barebones by alter your msconfig. Here is how:

1. Open your Start menu.

2. Click Run

3. In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"

4. In the "system configuration utility",click either "service" or "startup" tab

5. Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.

6. Click "OK"

There are MANY reasons for computer slow downs:

a] not enough memory

b] too many programs starting up with windows at boot up time

c] spyware

d] too many junk files

e] too many restore points

Routine maintenance the will definitely help restore your PC's speed to what it could/should be...

1. Increase your Virtual Memory, then

2. Download and run PageDefrg (free tool from Microsoft).

3. Run MSCONFIG and deactivate any startup programs that you DON'T want/need to run at boot time

4. Uninstall any unwanted programs

5. Ensure that you have more than 500 MB's of free space on your C: drive. (if not, it's not IF your PC will crash...it's WHEN your PC crashes). If not, move your Music/Videos offline to DVD's or CD's.

6. Purge all temp folders and internet temp files

7. Run defrag again after all the cleanup you just did.

8.install Registry cleaner and run daily

Use the tool: http://downloadlk.net/themosteffectiveregistrycleaner.htm [if you do not have one]

9. install Antispyware and run daily

Maybe you're infected by a virus , you can try removing it with free software , check this site out for more info :http://www.download.com/8301-2007_4-9835640-12.html

if it still slow , then you should try reinstalling you're operating system (xp , vista etc ) You'll need some technical skills if you don't have the recovery cd that you got when you bought your computer . If you have that recovery cd you should insert it and reboot your pc , it will give you options to reinstalling your windows which means you will loose all your data so i recommend backing your system up . when it's done you will have you're pc running like new .

Have you ever defragged your computer?

Hard drive fragmentation will severely affect the speed and reliability of your computer. Fragmentation is often the cause of system slows, malfunctions such as system hangs, program errors or a complete crash.

So defrag your hard drive, better yet, install an automatic defrag like Diskeeper, you can download free trialware at www.diskeeper.com.

there are multiple reasons

you may need to defrag your computer because you had a lot of files and deleted them (search your computer for a defrager)

you could have a virus that is destroying your registry files

in that case you should run a virus scanner such as superantispyware

thats the best one i know of that is free (download here http://www.superantispyware.com/)

or your c: drive is almost full

in that case you would need to delete some files and defrag.

just incase you should check for all of the following

If you're going to websites for gaming, I'd check for spyware & malware. (On top of the virus scan). Do you have AV software? If not, there is a good free one called AVG. I'd suggest installing it & using it. Only install after you've uninstalled any other anti virus software (2 anti virus applications don't play nice).

Another thought - make sure your RAM is in there good & tight...may need to reseat RAM though you'll usually have boot up problems if this is the case.

You sayyou've got rid of all the programs which aren't needed.

So maybe it's being slow because you open too many things at once and it can't cope with it, the more things you have open the slower it will be probably.

And maybe, even though you have got rid of all the unnecessary programs, you have so much stuff saved that it's slowing it down.

Try taking it to a professional to check for viruses anyway. (:

You might have a virus, so you should get that checked out, or it might be due to the weather as it can effect the internet signal. Sounds strange i know, but it's true.

check your recycle bin if it's full you have to empty it, sometimes when your recycle bin is full it slows down the computer, if that don't work then is a virus
