I am new to this so I will try to be short and sweet. I overclocked my XPS 730X to 3.6ghz. It is air cooled. Here are my settings:

Overclock Configuration

CPU BClk (mhz) -180
Spread Spectrum -Enabled
Adjust PCI Freq -Auto
Adjust PCI-E Freq -100
Intel Turbo Mode Tech -Disabled

Overvoltage Configuration

CPU Temperature Sensor - 48 C/ 116F
V core -1.296 V
Dynamic CPU Vcore Offset - +40
DDR3 Memory Voltage -Auto
IOH Voltage - 1.10v
QPI and uncore voltage - +040mv

Advance DRAM Config
7 Dram Clocks
trcd-7 dram
trp-7 dram
tras-20 dram
trfc-59 dram
twr-8 dram
twtr-4 dram
trrd-4 dram
trtp-4 dram
1T/2T-2T

I run Windows Vista 64 with no issues and can play Sins of Solar empire and Star Trek Legacy with no issue. Temps are around 48 celsius, but I when I run the latest version of prime95 about 2 minutes in the pc reboots. I have 6GB 1066 DDR3 ram with a GTX 285 1024gb. Are any of my settings off? Why can I run my games and desktop fine, but when i do a stress test it reboots? My temps never go over 50 celsius. This is all new to me so I am learning on my new PC. I am very frustrated.

You didn't say what setting your Memory Ratio setting is.

Auto, 6 , or 8 (like mine)

I'm sure leaving it on auto does, allow the MEM to adjust to the QPI settings, but I keep mine at 8, (as I like to tweak mine.) if you do, and have the CPU BClk at 180 it's possible your 1066Mhz RAM could be running as high as 1440Mhz, which isn't out of it's realm, but you'll need more voltage, and either a MEM cooling Fan or heatsinks, like these:

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16835233033

they are XIGMATEK dragoon-n422 Aluminum alloy HDT family cooler for RAM.

I have them in my Q6600 Rig OCed to 3.4 on Air. it was a good runner, I had Crucial Balistix DDR800 running at 1366Mhz with them, and they were still nice & cool...(may keep or sell... shrugs)

Like you, I wanted the I-7 BIG dell XPS 730x, as I guess most who posted here did!

Anyway, to forget about my MEM problems, I bought 2 sets of this RAM : http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820145240

Its called Corsair Dominator GT DDR3 1866Mhz 6 sticks is 12GB...

Fits in the XPS 730x like a glove

I love 64 bit computing, don't you?

It also takes the memory out of the equation, until you get to OCing the XPS past 4Ghz (if you keep the 920 2.66Ghz I-7)

personally I like the 950 I just got that runs at 3.06Ghz

(Dell wanted $900 for it LOL It goes for $550 or so)

Anyway, I'm just finishing up on Lapping the Waterblock for the CPU, and then, I'll be working on getting it past 5Ghz, with Watercooling

(the Dell H2C sucks) I built my own. If you want to know what to buy

let me know, I'll help you out!

Good luck, let us know those other settings... Sometimes its just a matter

of upping the settings 1 at a time, until it works for hours with Prime 95

could that you set the timing of your ram to High. Try the ram at factory seting for timing and run prime again.

|Also try to run cpu @ 3.3ghz ,, I know it should be fine @ 3.6 , but6 by trying these you'll where the problem come from.

You may want to increase voltage to cpu to feed the OC better.

After that you could keep playing at 3.6ghz or keeping adjusting until your your timing right.

if your you PC restarts on prime 95 your overclock is far from stable. what is the BSOD code you get?

i beave 0000101 and 0000124 mean you need more voltage... and most others mean your ram is failing at thoes speeds.

my i7 920 2.66 is overclocked to 3.81 and passed prime 95 for 8 hours plus.

Well, seeing as you overclocked it, the system is probably overloading and just can't cope with it. If you can, send it back to Dell and get them to repair it.
