I had the same problem with my e machines a few times for some reason, all I had to do was take out absolutely all the power connectors off the hardrive and plug them back in, had a bad connection somewhere, hard drives got power again and fired right back up, try using a diffrent 4-pin molex conector, could just be a lose wire not giving the hard drive power.

Don't just call it dead right away like everyone is telling you.

Am I right that you wrote your question from some other computer? Obviously, if you wrote it from your own computer and were able to, then there would be no problem, right?

Do you have a virus scanning program for your computer? I would absolutely do a full system scan. Could very well be a virus or worm or whatever.

It's unusual that something happens so suddenly and there's no reason for it. Do you have a reboot disk or floppy (I HOPE so). You could put that in to restart your computer so that you could at least reboot it and start a virus scan on it.

Have you tried to start it in safe mode? Or, does it do nothing at all and you can't even get that screen up?

I once had a virus or something that wiped everything out but it wasn't like what you're saying. My screen went blue, all blue. And, my hard drive was totally wiped out. I had to call Microsoft to help me set my computer up again. There was NO Geek Squad at that time. On an off, I was on the phone for like 7 hours with their reps (Microsoft/Windows) but they did get me up and running again and restored my system by telling me what to do.

You didn't say how old you computer is but if you had XP on it, doesn't sound too old. I'd not chuck it like people are telling you to do. Duh! Like that's not expensive to do!?!

If all else fails, try using a Geek Squad but, I would first email or contact Microsoft to see if they can help. If there's a charge, it will be cheaper than a new computer.

OR, do you have the XP software? Maybe you can just reinstall it???? I have Vista and there's a program where you can either delete, repair or replace your programs. Can you "repair" XP somewhere, using your software?

Gosh. That's a bummer. Hope you can figure something out or that something I said can help.

First, look at the Charlie d's post: if there is a clicking sound at the start time (like "click-click... pause....click-click.....), the hard drive is dead, and you have nothing to loose no more if you try the freezer solution (Watch the guarantee!). But, if there's no clicking sound, then enter the BIOS setup, by pressing "Del" or "F1" or "F2", depending on your motherboard (look on the screen at the very starting time) and there, in the (usually) first menu, select "Auto" for all drives. Save settings, according to BIOS instructions, and try again. If the settings were OK, or you did set them OK, but it still doesn't work, you have to check the power and data connections to the hard drive and to the motherboard, before concluding that it's a hardware failure. Be aware: if you have a CD or DVD unit connected with a separate cable to the motherboard, other than the one to the harddrive, and it is not detected neither, it's also possible a motherboard failure!! (but not always). I wish you good hardware luck!

sounds like hard drive failure. If this is the case, your computer has something similar to instant onset Alzheimer's, The main disk where it stores info would have died, so it would no longer have ANY info that the computer could access, including windows xp.

how did you post the question then? lol jk... on a serious note... it means your hard drive is shot usually... check to make sure the hard drive is plugged in still and not loose... but most likely when that happens the hard drive is dead

Your HDD is dead. Hope you made some backups.

THE FOLLOWING INFORMATION WILL INVALIDATE YOUR WARRANTY. SERIOUSLY DON"T DO THIS:

It's an old tech trick, but you can detach the hard drive, stick it in the freezer for an hour, and reattach it, and that MIGHT revive the drive long enough for you to make some backups of any vital data.

When you turn the PC on, do you hear a clicking sound? If you do the hard drive is shot (dead).

this error simply means that your Hard drive cannot be detected... try re connecting the cable to your HDD either SATA or IDE cable,,, this will do the trick
