2008-11-02 09:41:29 UTC
i have a g5 imac with a 1.83ghz processor, 2gb of ram (upgraded), about 55gb of spare hard drive and am currently running os 10.4.11.
so my sister just got a new imac and she lent me the installation disk for 10.5 but whenever i run it it says that i am not able to install os 10.5 and gives no further information...am i doing something wrong? or is my computer too balls to be able to run it? or something?

on the disc does it state that its for the intel version or does it not give any info ?

I would give apple a call and see if they do a seperate version for PPC macs.

How does one install Leopard on unsupported Macs?

MacInTouch readers have reported success in using two PowerPC-based Macs (G4, G5) to accomplish this. One Mac must be supported by Leopard. Start the other Mac in FireWire Target Disk Mode (see this Apple support article). Run the Leopard installer from DVD on the supported Mac, connect both Macs with a FireWire cable, and select the target Mac's hard drive from the installer.

Note that Leopard will not work on any G3-based Macs, including the original iMac, PowerBook G3, and G3 iBooks.

If you purchase your own copy :

you could try that and if that does not work then you can call them up for support and ask why it wont work :)

The only Core Duo iMacs that were sold are Intel, not G5 (Motorola).

The install disc that comes with a computer is made only for that specific model. It cannot be used on other models.

This is to prevent pirating of software, as you are trying to do.

You need to purchase a full retail version of Leopard to install it.

You need your own install CD. The CD that your sister has is hooked up to her computer, and her computer only. If her computer has an issue, she can reinstall the OS via her install disk, but no one else. Go to the apple website, and buy leopard for however many people (seats) you want.

Your sister's iMac runs on an intel processor, so the copy she has is for an intel core 2 processor, whereas you have a powerPC processor

I think your computer needs to get the updates in a sequence, because if you have a low operating system, you might need to make every update separately instead of jumping to 10.5

i dont think it allows it ( that same program ) to be running on two computers at the same time. there is a "serial code" for each disc so only one can be used at a time.

I think its because you got a mac when they were still using ppc chips. now they have switched to x86 (intel), so the OS isn't compatible

get your own install disk
