i don't know all the details; but my brother is blaming me for his computer breaking. He sais that I downloaded Lord of the rings online and his computer is getting all sorts of error messages, but here's the thing... I hate lord of the rings. Why on earth would I download a free online lord of the rings game? All I do on his computer is play world of warcraft; thats why he lets me on there. All I did was play warcraft, and search some things on wowhead.com His version of windows was bootleg and stopped working the other day, thats the only thing ive ever noticed with his computer. So what else could be the damn problem? What could have downloaded a game with no user at the computer? I turn it off when I'm done.

Chances are a worm or trojan got in and the computer is hijacked. The only solution to this: complete wipe of the hard drive, reinstallation of the operating system, and then finding out a good firewall (Zone Alarm is a good free choice) as well as an antivirus program (good one to try, AVG which offers a free option). After those two things (they are the FIRST things that should be done before redownloading and reinstalling anything else), make sure the latest definitions for the antivirus are downloaded and installed. Then locate and install anti-malware software (Spybot and Malware Bytes are good options and free). Try not to use Internet Explorer as browser.

Do not redownload anything until all of the security software is up and running.

It may be a good idea to use an OS that is legit ... a bootleg copy may be a reason why something managed to sneak into the system and completely mess it up. I don't know what OS he's using.

I'd suggest that you both spend time learning about online security and the issues we all, as users, have to face every time we go online. Even with the best of security suites available installed, we all still run certain risks, and as a gamer, the risks increase at least 50% (I am a MMO gamer). If certain sites are visited (porn sites, as mentioned) the risks go up 100% every time you log on to one, browser hijacking being among the most common.

Social networks like FB and MySpace also present risks. I've had my browser hijacked via one of those stupid app games in FB. I don't use apps there any longer for that reason.

Emails is another way by which a system can be hijacked (even without the user's knowledge). All you need is open an infected email or attachment, a worm/trojan sneaks in, and there it goes, zombie machine in the making (particularly if you keep it logged to the internet 24/7 and never bother to turn the system off).

Good luck.

Without knowing what kind of errors are reported it is hard to determine. however it could be possible that the site visited wowhead.com may have induced some virus or installed some program on the computer (in the background) that would be causing the problem. Assuming there is no virus scan program than this action of install it would not be detected

Instead of bitchin' and complainin', why don't you two hot-shots invest in a legit OS?

Ya probelly don't bother ta git upgrades (OS or drivers), at least try a FREE OS and both learn it together.

Porn sites are great for getting pop-ups and thus Viruses, and they likely installed cookies too.

You both remind me of two kids that wanna drive a car, but neither of you have a license.

Get some FREE software from CNET.com or FileHippo, get Anti Virus stuff, especially Microsoft Security Essentials from Bill Gates, get cookie crunchers, Registry cleaner uppers, Defragglers, Malware eater uppers, Trojan Horsey corallers, etc. etc.

When ya both KNOW what yer doin, visit them-thar porny sites, clean up afterwards and SMILE.

The on the spot demonstrate screen application might say "you're hook up with the modem, yet not linked with cyber web" or some thing like that. that's befell to me maximum of circumstances, i don't think of you are able to dodge it. it consistently comes back. there's a sturdy danger, that's not your pcs. circulate parent!

windows bootleg copy

that's the main problem

most bootleg copies come with modified software

which allow other people access to his system

so get your own with a legal copy of windows

or put one of the Linux distros on it

You say you are not children, yet you act like a child. Go buy your own computer and problem solved.
