A light hearted & silly question really, but ...

I have a 19 inch widescreen LCD monitor. I have the XP taskbar on the left side of the screen vertically, about an inch wide.

This means that when I have an internet window open, I have about 4 inches either side of the active page area, just sitting there unused.

It's kind of annoying, but maybe I'm just a little too fussy.

I know that on Vista you can have a giant clock to one side, but do you have any suggestions as to things I could put on one side, to make the screen look a little neater?

I'm not a big one on listening to music while I surf, besides, my Firefox browser has foxytunes built in, so I needn't open a separate media player. I don't have a TV card & I would like to just kind of fill up the empty space, 'cos I'm a little sad like that.

The calculator & other apps fill up the space when I'm using them, but what else could I have? Stripsaver or other adult apps are not suitable as my wife and 3 y.o. daughter use the PC

Vista sidebar for Microsoft Windows XP and Vista has gadgets like media players, google search, yahoo search and lots of more search engines. It has also gadgets like weather and system uptime and lots of more useful gadgets.

The sidebar uses 50% less RAM and is faster than the original Microsoft Sidebar with more extras and works on Microsoft Windows Vista and XP. Thoosje´s Vista Sidebar is also part of the Vista Transformation Pack that turns your XP OS into Windows Vista. http://www.freewarefiles.com/program_2_237_26498.html

Hmmmmm.......that is very fussy and considerably anal/obsessive behaviour, Doctor. You should really be able to recognise the symptoms.....

The diagnosis isn't all bad though, if you go to download.com and type Qlock in to the search box, you'll find a very neat world time gadget which will sit wherever you put it, you can change it's colour scheme and transparency and use it to set alarms (.wav files only stored in the qlock program file) and show the time in as many different countries as you see fit.

It's very......neat.

Other good freebies include moonphase 3.1, stellarium, audacity (audio editor), virtual ambience and alienGUIse by alienware.com. but only alienguise does anything to alter the appearance of the desktop. You may be able to fit both moonphase and qlock in to an 8 inch gap.

If none of this is quite obsessive enough for you, visit stardock.com, payout and download as many tweaks and gadgets as possible.

Having an orderly desktop will not make life any less chaotic.

EDIT: Well said that rather eccentric chap.
