I posted a similar question a while ago, but now the circumstances are quite different. A few days ago the sound on my computer stopped working out of nowhere. I had the same programs running that I always have, when suddenly there came a little blip sound from my speakers and then: nothing more. Just last night it suddenly started working again right after I updated the driver for my video card, which doesn't make sense to me but there you go. Then today, same programs running (browsers, WMP, World of Warcraft, iTunes) when BAM. Sound stops working. When I started up the AVI I was watching (which had been paused) it was all choppy, which it hadn't been before the sound stopped working.

The device listed under Sound is High Definition Audio Device, which I've no idea where to find drivers for. I tried installing one from Realtek, did nothing. I've asked Windows to try and find an update: nothing. I tried reinstalling the device itself, didn't help. All the settings are normal, and I'm out of ideas. Help!

I suspect that the problem is with the card itself.

1. Is it overheating? Check your fans and remove dust buildup from the card and the inside of your power supply (oil the P.S. fan while you're in there). Make sure you have good air circulation by the card.

2. Perhaps the card isn't well seated. Remove & reinsert the card a few times to wipe the card edge connection clean.

If still a problem, replace the card with a new one.

At this point, I would be more likely to believe there is a problem with the audio out jack, speaker wires, or external speakers. When it goes out again, wiggle the plug in the jack. If that doesnt get it, try a set of ear buds or headphones. This will at least tell you what direction to go.

DONT feel foolish! You are one of the very few in here who had the common sense to post details that made it easy to troubleshoot your problem! I give you an A!
