I have an HP Pavillion a1322in desktop. On the front panel the sticker reads 256mb ram upgradable to 2 gb.
What does this mean? what if i get 2 2gb module(right now there are 2 256mb modules in it), what will happen if i try to up the ram to that level?

your motherboard.

Cheap old mother board with only two memory slots. You cant add sticks to it for more memory, you must replace the ones you have with higher capacity memory. It says the suggested ram limit is two gigs, so replace your 256's with two I gigs.

It is possible that it will take 4, but I wouldn't count on it. The limitation is not a chip-set limitation and may reflect the small number of 2 gb modules available when your computer came out, but this is something you would want to test before you dumped the money. Look for driver upgrades for the motherboard and see if any of them address this. Keep in mind, that if you are running a 32 bit, XP it only takes up to 3 G.

Dear User,

It means that your system is working now on 512 MB RAM and if you want to use 2 GB RAM just remove the two 256MB RAM and install a 1GB each RAM in two slots it will be better if one RAM fails the other 1GB will be working and if you install 2GB single RAM then there is a risk it it creates problems then you will having no choice other than replacing it. Thanks

You would have wasted your money and time. IF the computer boots at all, it will only read the max 2gb of RAM.

If you try to up the ram to that level, it will work if you are using compatible RAM modules. If you use incompatible modules it won't work. Going from 512MB to 2GB should speed up the performance of your pc.

It means you can put a total of 2 Gb of memory in your pc.

You can install 8GB if you want but the computer will only read the 2GB
