Windows tends to be very insistant about installing itself on Disc 0, Partition 0

What is on Partition 1 that you don't want to get rid of?

(to the person above who said it should go onto "C" there is no "C"... YET

"C" is wherever the active operating system is.

LAst point, a Windows 7 installer will typically create a partition 100mb smaller

than you tell it to IF you allow it to create a partition that "missing" 100mb goes into a "System reserved" partition at the front of the drive. it is an unlettered partition that is not user accessable.

There are two ways of avoiding this 100mb partition,

First is to create a partition as a seperate operation on another computer and or another working operating system, then during install you tell windows 7 to install in that exsisting partition.

The other way is to install windows 7 as an "upgrade" over a working Vista installation.

In either case it will not create that additional partition.

how many partitions are current in use? if none of them are delete them and create a new partition. if you are just wanting to replace an old OS and you don't care about losing any of the stuff on that OS, then like the above option, delete it and create a new one. Install Win 7 on that new partition. That should work well, in some cases that still doesn't work. So once you have deleted all partitions, format the HDD, there should be an option to do so. Once format is complete, create a partition to the desired size and install Win 7 and away you go.

Good luck, hope I helped.

Boot up on your XP installation disk. Delete the partition. Boot up on the Windows 7 disk in it will install.

in case you are able to, take this disk out and positioned it in yet another residing house windows laptop (XP/Vista/Windows7) Then use the disk supervisor there to delete any partitions Then format it (NTFS) and maximum severely make the partition "lively". that's all accessible using the nicely suited-click menu in residing house windows Disk administration.
