Question:
Where to buy 4 to 6 pin adapter?
2011-05-21 07:50:48 UTC
I've run into a snag when trying to run my new 9800gt graphics card; it requires a 6 pin adapter to connect it directly to the power supply. I don't have one.

I'm extremely crunched for time as I purchased this card for my brother's birthday Monday. What stores can I find a 4 to 6 pin adapter? Not online, obviously; I don't want to pay $20 for an item that at a store would cost only $7. Not to mention the shipping times are out of the question at this juncture.

Open the case and read the label on that power supply first. Most power supplies which don't have a 6-pin PCI-E power connector are 300 watts or lower, which isn't enough for a 9800GT. If you have an older 400W or higher power supply, the adapter should work.

Buying online from Amazon or Newegg is probably cheapest because they don't have the exorbitant shipping costs that you sometimes find on Ebay. But given your time crunch I'd recommend Fry's electronics or a local computer shop (like the mom & pop operations found in strip malls). They are your best bets- the adapter should be $7 or less.

With this question it would be very helpful for you to list the city which you reside.

If you're in a larger city like LA or Denver you should look up either Fry's Electronics or Microcenter. If you're in a smaller town then you're most likely limited to a local repair shop. Best Buy would be a good place to start as well, but they'll probably charge you through the nose for any cable.

If you bought the item used then you could contact the person who sold you the card. If this person bought the item new then he/she may still have the 4-pin molex to 6-pin PCI-E adapters.

In a city of that size you're probably limited to a repair shop like Personalized Computers (573) 817-2597, Radio Shack (573) 445-2268, or Best Buy 573-447-3044.

There is a MicroCenter in St.Louis. It wouldn't be worth it for you to drive there for a small part like that. Just keep in mind they have pretty good deals on processors and they carry pretty much every computer hardware part known to man. Not outdated items.

You could also scour the craigslist ads and contact people who are selling graphics cards.

I don't know specifically, but just start running to all your electronic stores. Future shop, best buy, target, etc. Sometimes you can get lucky at good will stores. That's where I found a power cord for my laptop I lost.

can't help with your sourcing prob as i am in UK! however, a power supply without a 6-pin pci-e connector? are you sure that it is powerful enough? these cards need lots of power. an old generic power supply could lose you everything in a puff of smoke!
