Hrm, you could get a serial switch box for the monitors and change video settings if you wanted to alternate between the two "on the fly" but I don't believe that would be all that "quick" probably 1-2 mins to convert things if you know exactly where you're going.
The visual aspect of putting two monitors side by side for a "larger" workspace just doesn't work out with most monitors...we still register that gap between as humans and it's annoying. I'd go with the two computers two monitors multi-task option.

One thing i would recomend is, buy a keyboard+mouse A-B switch, and a monitor A-B switch. Then hook both computers into the switches, and while you are multi tasking, flip the switch back and forth between computers. Works quite well, I've done this for when I ran a webserver out of my house, hooked the server and main PC up at the same desk and did my normal things as the server worked.

i had the same decision a while back but i had a third moniter so i put two on one and 1 on the less powerfull one... i thought the exact same thing u did (work on one chech email on the other...etc) and i barely turn on the less powerfull one on. But if u want to switch 2 computers on the same moniters and keyboards easily they make some switches for that but they will run u about 120-300 so i recomend picking up a cheap crt from craigslist.org for your second computer.

I would prefer two separate systems networked together but it looks like they are used very frequently. I would recommend Dual KVM (Keyboard Video Monitor) solution. Not really the cheapest solution but it will give you dual monitor for both your systems.

I'd have to choose option 1.

2 (one master and one slave) computers in network and two monitors to view the master computer will be the best possible combination
