You can use XP 32-bit and it should not cause any problems.

When buying Windows 7 make sure that you buy Windows 7 64-bit (not 32-bit).

WinXP 32bit supports X GiB of RAM, but only some part is available for the applications (rest is reserved for the system). Usually it supports total 4GB RAM and only (2.5 GiB, 3 GiB or 3.25 GiB) is available for the applications. The amount of reserved memory depends on service pack version, windows version, PAE availability and some other factors. Some versions of windows supports more/less than 4GiB of RAM although the architecture is only 32-bit.

64-bit windows can support more memory, however 32-bit applications are still limited to 4GiB of RAM per application. You might think that 64-bit windows give you access to 2^64 B of RAM - which is not true. Common addressing forms used are 2^40 and 2^48 with some area reserved.

For details use google.

A 32bit operating system will only support around 3.3 gig. You want a 64bit operating system to get the full 4 gig, and i would forget a partition, just go win7

XP will work with 4 gig installed, you just wont get 4gig

lots of the 4 GB of RAM in a 32-bit OS are used for what's declared as "handle area". listed right here are lots of the factors that require handle area. *gadget ROM *APIC(s) *integrated PCI gadgets, which includes community connectors and SCSI controllers *PCI enjoying cards *pix card *PCI show enjoying cards (if ideal) In a sixty 4-bit OS you're able to have a optimum of 128 GB of RAM of which 37 bits would be reserved for handle area.
