apache.exe seems like it doesn't belong unless you are running a web server. Someone might be using your computer as a zombie pc to bounce spam email.

Are you running your internet connection through a proxie? That is probably a security hole if it exists.

A free program that works good at helping identify running processes both hidden and presented by your task manager is Winpatrol http://www.winpatrol.com/ and should be helpful in your quest to keep on top of what is running on your PC.

svchost.exe - Don't mess with these guys. They're important.

nvsvc32.exe -kill

wmiprvse.exe - Manages windows updates, kill it if you'd like.

taskmgr.exe - Taskmanager you're looking at for this list, close it when you're done.

wuauclt.exe - More with the windows updates, kill.

firefox.exe - Close it if you see it open while not browsing the internet.

DkService.exe - This is associated with Executive Software Diskeeper, kill or keep, your call. I'd kill, though.

svchost.exe - Seriously, don't mess with svchost.exe

nSvcLog.exe - nVidia logging program. Kill if you're not using it.

nSvcIp.exe - Kill if you want.

nTrayFw.exe - nVidia services tray. Not useful if you're not using it. Go ahead and kill.

avgcc.exe - Virus protection, kill it if you're feeling lucky.

Apache.exe - If you don't need Apache server open, you can close this. Unless, of course, you're playing an Apache game, then this will likely be your game.

explorer.exe - Close this and your desktop, and your explorer(not firefox) windows go bye-bye. Open a new process called explorer and the desktop comes right back. Can be useful if you don't want to restart your computer when you install something that tells you you'll need to.

wscntfy.exe - Windows Security center. Kill if you'd like.

avgemc.exe - More AVG anti-virus. Kill if you're feeling lucky.

avgupsvc.exe - Again, more AVG.

avgamsvr.exe - And again.

spoolsv.exe - Put these in that same category as svchost.exe and don't mess with them.

alg.exe - Windows networking process, but get rid of it if you want.

svchost.exe - Dude, seriously, don't touch!

svchost.exe - !!!

svchost.exe - !!

svchost.exe - !

svchost.exe

lsass.exe - Again, more important windows stuff.

services.exe - Same here, very important.

winlogon.exe - Also important.

csrss.exe - Same here...

smss.exe - ...and here, don't touch.

Apache.exe - Strange there're two running, I'm not familiar with Apache server, though.

nSvcAppFlt.exe - nVidia stuff, go ahead and kill once your computer is running.

Some of these need to start up when the computer starts up, but will be safe to kill once it's in booted up all the way. You should be good to close everything, once you're up and running, leaving only:

spoolsv.exe

svchost.exe (multiple, don't close any)

lsass.exe

services.exe

winlogon.exe

csrss.exe

smss.exe

explorer.exe (if you're really being stingy about RAM and opperating overhead, you can close explorer once you start doing something more intensive, but you'll lose some functionality of windows.)

Edit: You may want to get a copy of a program called HijackThis in order to prevent Apache services from starting.

Are you out of your mind? Don't just go around killing processes. There is no normal range, it depends on what computer you have and what you have installed. My desktop runs about 50 processes and my laptop about 95. None of these need to be killed. I can tell that you are running firefox and that will end when you close it out. The only thing that raises question is Apache.exe. I don't know what that is doing on your desktop. Don't start killing processes if you don't know what you are doing. Besides they just come up again at startup unless you uninstall them or remove them from the registry.

Edit: are you intensionally running a webserver?

Actually, I don't see much to "cut" here. Your AVG is running 4 processes and your n-Vidia graphics card is running 5.

If you don't have a printer you could disable Print Spooler in services.msc to get rid of spoolsv.exe.

You could disable other unused Windows services and probably end up with only 3 or 4 instances of svchost.exe. A decent guide to disabling services (XP) is:

http://www.theeldergeek.com/services_guide.htm

Honestly, I don't see a whole lot of bloat here.

Good luck.

The only "non-normal" processes listed are:

Apache

firefox

DkService

and the "nv" and "avg" services

Apache is your web server. If not needed, shut it down.

Firefox is obvious. it will go away when you close Firefox.

The "nv" services are for your nVidia video card. Leave them alone.

The "avg" services are for AVG AntiVirus. Leave them alone.

Dkservice is DiskKeeper. To get rid of it, you have to uninstall DiskKeeper.

In a nutshell, there is nothing abnormal going on. If your system is slow, shut down apache first.

nvsvc32.exe for nod32

avgemc.exe

avgupsvc.exe

avgamsvr.exe AVG anti virus...

donot use 2 anti virus soft....uninstall AVG ....nod is much better

{1}

use this trek...

start >run >type "msconfig">startup>

here you will find all your processes ......

uncheck those ...u don't need....

i suggest uncheck...Apache.exe...its resource hungry process

when u need this service click Apache.exe in program manu...

DkService.exe is for disk keeper life ....stop it in msconfig...

thats all..........

{2}

more to twig go..control panel > Administrative Tools > Services > read description thoroly and stop as u want....

to stop this ...2click any process change startup tupe as manual... then stop it...

but as 4 my suggestion don't go 2nd advice....

go 1st advice....
