Well it really depends on want you want to do on your computer.

If your just going to use it to search the web and use microsoft office just get a prebuilt cheap computer.

If your looking into something with gaming/3D grapgics, Designing and you want speed on your computer customize it.

If your going to customize i would recommend these specs to include:

-Intel Core Duo 2 1.8ghz and up

-2gb of Memory/Ram or more

-120gb Hard Drive (get a high hard drive speed so you can access documents faster - 5400 or more)

-Nvidia 6800/7800/8600

-Video Ram +128

Brands:

HP - Good

Apple - High Price but they last

Sony - High Price and good quality

Toshiba - ok

Dell - ok

there is no question that u should build your own, but before u build u need to have a have a few things down.

1) u need to be able to follow directions, the directions that come with the mother board have to be followed exactly the 1st time u build one

2) even though it will save u money u need to know that if u break something or need tech support u have to go through the parts manufactures, so u need to be sure of ur skills and debuging

3) if u arnt into looking at tech stuff all day u need to go and join a forum and ask for help, i recamend going to

http://www.xtremesystems.com/index.php

or

http://www.therubysquare.com <--- im a mod i will make any1 who asks a parts list for their budget

both of those forums are free and have techie people who will help u pick parts and trouble shoot

4) expect to spend about 10 hours assembling (it only takes 1.5 hours when u get what ur doing) + 5-8 hours of installing software and $1000 on parts and $130 on windows or osx + shipping minimum to get ur computer, but that will last u at least 4 years probably 5 years of gaming

If i was you i'd build my own. You can get a much better system for the same amount of money if you build it yourself. Some computer places will even build it for you for free if you buy all the components from them. You just need to know exactly what hardware you want

Its on your choice , Today computers are cheeper, If you are wanting bigger RAM or Harddisk , or you want a particular processor then assembled one is good otherwise for common use I think ready made are fine .Think Before You Buy, and get the full reciept for warranty also.

It depends on your level of expertise in the knowledge of hardware. If you know exactly what you want then you should have one custom made. If you don't know what I'm talking about then get one that is prefab from the manufacturer.

Depends upon what you intend to use if for. However, if you have the knowledge of how to build a PC, you can save alot of money, building a much better system than one some company put together for profit. I say build it.

I say build it yourself, go to dell.com, they have great PC build options and are cheap, you will also be able to see the difference in building a laptop yourself on their site and buying a ready made PC.

i agree with anyone who said they should build their own systems. i have built my own system, and lemme tell you its simply amazing and its also 10x cheaper than what name brand stores and companies are trying to sell you.

i highly suggest this setup:

AMD 64 X2 5200

ASUS M2N-SLI MOTHERBOARD SOCKET AM2

CORSAIR XMS2 RAM (2X1 GB)

SEAGATE 320 GB HARD DRIVE

LITE-ON DVD BURNER WITH LITESCRIBE(NOT LIKE ILL EVER USE IT)

RAIDMAX 530 WATT PSU

ANTEC 900 ATX CASE

XFX GEFORCE 6600(FOR NOW)

all for a whopping total of 591.66

good luck with what you choose
