First the cleanup utility...this just deletes the files that are not needed for the general running of your operating system/installed software (temp internet files, cookies, etc etc) It's just an easy way of getting rid of these files without having to hunt through the directories yourself. Be warned, if you delete cookies you will lose things like your saved website settings user names/passwords etc.

Defragmenter....Basically it puts all the data on your harddrive (HDD) in order. When you write data to your HDD it's physically written onto it in a somewhat sporadic method. All defrag does is tidy it up a bit. Doesn't make a huge amount of difference.

Disk cleanup removes unwanted and temporary files from the drive to clean up the disk and restore disk space.

Defragmentation puts file fragments together to make a fragmented file contiguous. This will IMPROVE disk and system performance since the contiguous file can be accessed much faster than a fragmented file.

However, the Windows built-in defragger is quite lousy.

Diskeeper is the best defragmenter for Windows. It's faster, more powerful and easier to use than other defragmenters because of it's automatic defrag option. Get free trial versions from http://www.diskeeper.com and use it.

Also, running a chkdsk before the defrag might be a good idea if you have never done it before.

NO absolutely !!

Basically when install any software or copy some data into your pc , the information doesnt get stored contiguously in system memory since no continous empty space would be available for that. So your OS just 3

" fragments " your data and stores it wherever free spaces are available .

This results in slow access times and sometimes even " hang up" .So we use disc defragmenter to join these related fragments and store it in contiguous memory locations .

Disc cleanup , clears up unneccesary files and tries to free up some disc space.

Disk defragmentation is used to increase the access speed by rearranging the files and free spcae.

Disc Cleanup utility is used to determine which files on a hard drive may no longer needed and delete those files acordingly.

The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk by searching your disk for files that you can safely delete. You can choose to delete some or all of the files. Use Disk Cleanup to perform any of the following tasks to free up space on your hard disk:

Remove temporary Internet files.

Remove downloaded program files. For example, ActiveX controls and Java applets that are downloaded from the Internet.

Empty the Recycle Bin.

Remove Windows temporary files.

Remove optional Windows components that you are not using.

Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

Disk Defragmenter is a computer program included in Microsoft Windows designed to increase access speed by rearranging files stored on a disk to occupy contiguous storage locations, a technique commonly known as defragmenting. The purpose is to optimize the time it takes to read and write files to/from the disk by minimizing head travel time and maximizing the transfer rate. As of Windows XP, Disk Defragmenter is also used to improve system startup times.

Yes, there is a chance of losing data.

1. Disc clean up should be done before starting defragment.

2. Deframent helps your computer works fast through rearranging the computer with links.

When the deframent runs, you should do anything with your computer because it may use the same file what you are working with your computer. so dont work with any application when the defragment running.

Diskcleanup helps clear out unwanted files like temporary files, recycle bin files etc. It helps create more space.

Defrag speeds up file access by rearranging fragmented files back into a sequential order.

No data will be lost running these.

However its always good to backup your files from time to time.

For diskcleanup I suggest CCleaner.

For defrag, get Diskeeper09 and set it on automatic mode, and forget about manual defrag.

data wont lost

cleanup doesnt delete the files directly it collects the the data that can be deleted first( collects waste data). then asks for confirmation to delete you may choose to delete or not to delete

defragmenter arranges the data in sequence on harddrive only. that leads to enhance ment in performance.

you should go for both. speed of your computer will be good.
