Receive and error

am trying to defragment my drive (C Drive) and it keeps on saying that
:Some files in this volume could not be defragmented"
to look for those files in report.. I dont understand because since my computer had been having some problems I did a recovery (destructive) and I am still having the same problem that the files cannot be defragmented. I am not very computer savvy so I am totally lost.

Those files that could not be defragmented are probably system files that the Windows defragmenter cannot defrag (even in 'safe' mode).

Another possibility is that there is insufficient free space on the drive to defrag those files.

The easiest solution to download and install the free 30-day trial version of Diskeeper 2008 from here

http://www.diskeeper.com/downloads/downloads-r.asp

Defragment it using Diskeeper 2008, it will defrag even with low disk space. You can install it and turn on the automatic defrag. You *may* need to run a boot-time defrag if the master file table and paging file are fragmented. The Diskeeper analysis will tell if these 2 files are fragmented.

Remember, it's free for 30 days.

Some files can be locked in use by the system. But the main file (which is huge) that normally does not ever get defragmented is the page file. This is a file that windows uses to swap memory to sometimes. When I run defrag I normally have a list of about 5 files that can't be defraged also. This is ok. The files are usually very small and won't affect the overall system performance. The defrag should have defrag'd all the other files which is going to make a huge difference in speed.

It is normal for a few files to be locked during defragmentation. Even when all other programs are closed, the operating system still needs some files open to do its job. You really shouldn't be concerned with this, as long as your computer is running smoothly.

P.S. Kudos for defragmenting your hard drive, it's a very good thing to do but not many people do it. It will help keep your system running fast and extend the life of your hard drive.

Some files that are in use can not be defragmented. You can probably tell the program to perform a Boot Time defragmentation and then restart and have it fixed.

that's strange and unacceptable! I surely have by no potential heard of Asulogics; the defrag application in XP is surely sufficient for many folk and that i've got self assurance replaced into initially written via Diskeeper, that's a good product. have been you working defrag on an analogous time as OE replaced into working? this is often very no longer elementary till the defrag application is somewhat smart. for the reason that XP can do many projects "concurrently", if OE is changing something on an analogous time Defrag is moving it, that's absolutely everyone's wager what the end result would be. Now, this might no longer be your case, yet interior the destiny, carry out a little cleanup in the previous defragging. close all classes (properly, different than Spider Solitare!), sparkling out your cookies and momentary IE data, and empty the Recycle Bin.
