800mhz Pentium 3 CPU
Onboard graphics
512mb RAM

The graphics are rubbish so Compiz Fusion is a non-starter.

hm, graphics is rubbish.. hm, ok.

Xubuntu should be fine. Otherwise, a minimal Linux distro with OpeBox as the sole window manager. And the purpose of the box will be to work as a proxy server, firewall, backup box, experimental PC, development PC, occassionally use it for some non-graphics intensive network games..

Also there are some lesser known OSes like AROS, Plan9, Minix and so on.. I'll try using them on this box. They are more than happy to find a box with specs like these. They are still being built for PCs with lower specs..

I'd say load your namesake on there, but try using a lighter window manager than GNOME, such as XFCE (you can use Xubuntu for that), IceWM, awesome, DWM, wmii, xmonad, or ratpoison.

It's not hard at all to switch between window managers while Linux is loaded, and getting them is as easy as a couple clicks, so why not try them out until you find one you like?

Curious question, I run ubuntu on a 500Mhz laptop with 128mB RAM, works fine if not a little slowly. I suggest scrapping X11 and going with ubuntu server and the cli.
