I have Media Center Edition XP for my Dell 8400. I used the "Window Vista Upgrade Advisor" and it said it can run on my computer. But I heard XP will stop being supported in Feb. 2008. Does this mean I HAVE to get Window Vista because of security etc. and for XP it will stop working...so should I upgrade will at all, or an at the beginning of 2008...

I'd wait till they come out with Service pack 1 for Vista. I haven't heard about XP support being stopped - usually they go 5 years or more.

You should buy vista in late 2007 or January 2008, because you have to wait when most of computer software is compatible with vista, and when you have the money.

Because i think, even when XP is not supported anymore, the XP will still be a reliable OS. This kind of thinking is supported by the fact that many people in the world is just still upgrading theeir PCs to XP, so if microsoft and any other software companies(and hardware) stops their support XP, they will lose profit.

Despite the compatibility of your computer to handle Vista, my advice would be to wait until you buy your next computer. XP will be safe for years yet as long as you run a virus program. I still have several computers running windows 98 or 2000, and as long as my virus program is current, no problems. With an upgrade, you will also have hardware issues to contend with. Is you printer a current model? Do you use a digital camera program? These are issues above the computer being able to handle the upgrade. Also, after you spend $150+ for Vista then purchase a new computer, your program will be trash. Uncle Bill (Microsoft) says you need a new Operating System for each computer and/or major upgrade.

If it isn't broke, then don't fix it.

I have no problems w/Vista, my network consists of.

Windows SBS 2003 Server

2 Vista Business Edition Machines,

1 Vista Ultimate Tablet PC

2 IPAQ's

1 Linux Server

1 Linux Desktop

1 Windows 98SE Machine

4 Windows XP Machines

2 Windows Media Center Laptops

These are all tied into one network. My thoughts are, MS is good, but customers run out of money cuz of MS, so I try and save the customer money by alternative means.

I even have a customer running Windows 3.11 still !!!!

Windows won't ever expire.. but support will end for XP sometime in 2017.

If you do decide to run w/Vista then be heavy on the graphics card and run 2 gig of ram (you won't be sorry).

I'd wait until after the first major service pack release. I have it on a work system and most everything I've experienced thus far is pretty much cosmetic.

I did however turn off that annoying "security feature" that wanted confirmation for everything from going into Control Panel to taking a bathroom break.

Winvista has too many bugs. Don't upgrade to it at least for a year or 2, not until microsoft puts out sp1 for it. As for me, I will use winxp forever.

I am currently running vista, and i dont like it. So many programs are not supported.

May be you are ready if you have all updated software for the programs you are interested.

Never...and I mean it. Horrible with existing machines as an upgrade... arguably it's that bad in new machines too...but as an upgrade, stay away.

I wouldn't upgrade until later on, when more updates come with the upgrade and glitches are fixed...

wait until vista has ironed out all of its bugs (and there are MANY!) before "upgrading."

Not at the moment, you would be in more trouble than flash gordon, be patient and wait for a while.
