Question:
Why was my computer slow, is it because?

I installed AVG AntiVirus on it?

My PC was working perfectly fine, normal speed, etc. I had SpyBot and McAfee Firewall already on it. I downloaded and installed SpyBot and AVG on it because I didn't have an AV. I also downloaded and installed CCleaner and cleaned up my system and registry, it removed about 1GB of space and fixed around 150 registry errors.

After that both my IE and Firefox were reallllyyy slow on starting up and pages wouldn't load properly and other files and folders took long to open as well. I have just uninstalled AVG as I suspected that's what was making my system slow down. My IE and Firefoz pages now open quickly again and there doesn't seem to be a problem anymore (not yet anyway).

I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it was in fact AVG that slowed down my system then? And what other AV should I use then which is better and won't mess the system up as much? Also do you think I did any damage with the CCleaner? When I ran the cleaner, all the options were selected so it basically cleaned everything. Should I remove it now or is it safe to continue using it?

Thanks for any help, I really appreciate it and sorry the question was so long.

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

How much RAM is on your system? AV's and anti spyware etc can take up a lot of RAM.

Personally in my own experience I was never happy running AVG and I changed to Avast! which I am finding much better.

I don't think that CCleaner would cause trouble I run it myself all the time at least once maybe twice a day cause I do a lot of surfing and it's great at freeing up space.

All in all from what you say I'd suggest that not enough RAM is the most likely suspect for your system slow down.

I found McAfee slowed my computer down when I used it to be honest, I prefer to use the Vista Firewall but I have used Zonealarm which didnt slow my machine down much. AVG is quite good but Avira Antivir is better and is lighter to use, AVG shouldnt have caused all those problems though. I have CCleaner which hasnt caused me any problems. If you are going to change CCleaner you could try Advanced System Care which I also use. Also I would download Auslogics defrag which I find is very good.

It could be the AVG, as computers sometimes don't like certain software. Mine hates Norton, but runs a treat with Mcafee. On the other hand, it could be that you cleaned out something you did not want to clean out. Sometimes, if you get rid of all your cookies, for instance, you may and I stress MAY find that your favourite websites open a little slower the first time you re visit them. Hope this is of some help.

Everyone knows that Windows computers can sometimes slow down over time. While not an exhaustive list of solutions to problems, this collection presents some ways to speed up a computer.

1. De-Fragmenting

Over time, the data on your hard drive gets scattered. Defragmenting your hard drive puts your data back into sequential order, making it easier for Windows to access it. As a result, the performance of your computer will improve.

a) Right click of C Disk.

b) Click properties.

c) Click tools tab.

d) Click "Defragment now".

e) Click Defragment.

2. Uninstall Unneeded Programs

Removing programs that you no longer use can free up space on your computer and speed up your system's performance. However, you need to uninstall the programs properly to see much improvement; deleting them is not enough.

3. Stop Programs from starting on Windows boot

One way you can speed up your computer is to prevent programs from launching themselves at start-up. Not only do the unwanted programs delay the start of Windows, they also continue to slow down your computer since they use system resources.

a) Open your Start menu.

b) Click Run

c) In the command screen type "msconfig.exe"

d) In the "system configuration utility", click either "service" or "startup" tab

e) Uncheck all programs that you are no longer using.

f) Click "OK"

4. Check for Spyware and Adware

Spyware is software that allows companies to monitor what websites you visit or even access your computer. Adware is software that displays advertisements. Both use system resources and slow your computer down. Detecting and removing the programs will improve system performance.

The latest AVG is memory hungry so that would slow your comp down. Get more RAM, its the cheapest and easiest way to speed up a Pc. I have 4GB Ram on my Vista pc and AVG works fine with no slow downs.

Yes, it was your av program that slowed down your pc. These programs are designed to filter web images and things like that which slows down the loading speed of certain webpages. I suggest Avast home antivirus. It works well and does not really slow down your pc. Good luck chum!

As on your laptop, it does have something to do with it. Your internet browser has to load, and your laptop runs it. Viruses could additionally decelerate your laptop and take in relatively some your information superhighway connection, making it look sluggish

Get hold of a copy of AVG 7.5.441 instead of the later versions. 7.5 doesn't affect the speed of your browsers.
