For older systems, you are probably going to need drivers for the system to recognize the hard drive. Hopefully, the external usb hard drive and flash card came with drivers to install on an older operating system, such as Windows 98. If not, you can check the manufacturer's website of the flash driver and hard drive, maybe they have the needed drivers for you to download.

Not sure of how much data you have to transfer to the new xp pc, but if the Windows 98 computer had a CD burner, you can also try burning the data to CDs and copy them this way to the new PC.

Good Luck.

You may only have have support for USB 1.0 hardware. The external harddrive you are connecting is probably a USB 2.0. You can purchase 2.0 USB cards that you can put in an empty PCI slot but I would consider upgrading the computer first. Anything older than 3 years, you'll have consistant problems with new hardware and software.

attaching a 160gb usb external hard drive?

on a 6year old pc with windows 98 on

gosh i dont think your 6year old pc will take that 160 gb hard drive on coz of the motherbord

what you need to do is make the 160gb the master hard drive remove the old hard drive and set up the 160gb as the master hard drive then put in a windows boot disk and set windows 98 on to the new 160gbwhen you have doen that make the old hard drive a the slave drive your have to reset the jumpers on that old hard drive to slave and set the jumpers on the new hard drive to master

but really 6years old its time too buy a new pc

Windows 98 first edition does not support USB. 98 SE supports USB. XP SP2 supports USB 2. Try upgrading your OS.

Win 98 is not or will not be supported anymore. Better to buy a OEM version of Win XP Pro. Cheaper than a boxed version. It will self install and reformat your new hard drive.

your external hdd uses USB 2.0 but your computer doesn't support it and USB 1.0 is too slower than 2.0 so It takes too long to copy large files to ext hdd by the way you can download an USB driver from your hdd manufacturer website and try the new driver for recognizing it by win98
