I have a 5-6 year old dell optiplex gx280 xp desktop and it has recently really screwed up and the memory is all used up even though I have tried uninstalling stuff it won't work.

I was wondering if there was any way to restore it to factory settings without a disk as its second hand and no disk came with it.

I have also contacted dell and some computer shops in my area and the disk is discontinued. I have tried all the f8 and ect at startup and nothing seems to work.

Many thanks
Mollie

Yeah, you are not the only one. This problem happens to everyone who doesn't maintains his computer by regular disk defragments, disk cleanups, organizing data, cleaning registry and scanning for viruses.

Now you have a few options:

The most preferred is Reinstall the Operating system. And by that i mean clean install. Not recovering the windows. Then after installation, immediately install an antivirus (Kaspersky preferred), and scan whole computer. I hope you will get your Laptop fixed.

You are welcome

To reboot the machine you simply just turn it off and then turn it back on! That is a reboot, what you are trying to do is a reinstall of the OS, because you don't know the terminology correctly, I would say just take it to a shop and have them reinstall the OS for you.
