Try "last known good"...if a recently installed driver is causing the issue this should fix it. However, if this doesn't work a corrupt or missing system file is the likely culprit - in this case you'll want to boot from the OS disk and perform a repair. If you go this route you'll want to visit windowsupdate ASAP and get all of the security fixes after repair is finished.

Okay, now this can be a multi-step answer to get your machine back. I'm going to try to offer computer tune up advice. Please clarify windows 98,2000,NT, XP, Vista.. (I will assume XP). If for any reason you feel uncomfortable taking any of these steps you can private message me for more info.

->Choose "Safe mode" (**without** networking if possible)

If you are able to login good. After logging in, make sure to note any messages and/or behaviours..Ex. Popups, Unordinary flickering, Phantom mouse gestures, Screen Graphics look strange(low quality graphics/ images),

-> Log out => click start->logout->restart.

If the computer does not start normally, you should consider having a local professional computer technician take a look at your machine.

If it starts normally, good. Now we want to make sure you computer A) not infected by a virus B) that windows is still working " okay ".

NOTEs:

1)

- Make sure you have an anti-virus installed!

Try AVG Free. Its not the best but it will provide a basic level of protection for your machine. Make sure to update it.

2)

- There is a very powerful free viurs scanner Dr. Web's "CureIt.exe" utility.Its an on-demand virus scanner for windows.

Get it here [ ftp://ftp.drweb.com/pub/drweb/cureit/cureit.exe ]

- scan your computer with it, and *review* and *remove* any infections. Be careful what you remove, at the least note them.

3) Get CCleaner. Its free.[ http://www.ccleaner.com/download ]

- Install it,it will give you options *read* them.

- After installing

=> click the sweeper icon 'Cleaner'=> You will have a number of option on the leftside *uncheck* "Empty recycle bin"

note: This option will delete everything from your recycle bin, fer good. So its a good idea - even though its in the recycle bin - to make sure there is nothing inside you may want to keep for later.

=>Click "Run Cleaner" this will remove junk files. You may be warned 'removing some advertisements may ...". Its only saying some software on your machine installs with advertisements and removing them may void the warrenty. I would not worry about it.

4) Uninstall any unnecessary *User-installed* Programs (control panel->add/remove programs.) If you dont know what they do, check search engines *before* removing them.

Ex.. Googl'ing or Yahoo'ing "svchost.exe" will return links like "What is svchost.exe And Why Is It Running? :: the How-To Geek". Don't be affraid to read up about what your searching for.

You will be in a better position to decide if the program is really necessary.

5) Next check to see if you disk is defragmented. It may take anywhere from an 30mins to a few hours, so you may want to run it overnight.

- Choose start=>All programs=>accessories=>system tools=>Disk Defragmenter

*OR*

- Control Panel ->Administrative Tools ->Computer management->Disk Defragmenter

- Choose your main drive usually '(C:)'=>choose analyze=> it will suggest if you need to defragment your drive.

try start windows normally first, then try lass known good.

If neither of those work do a system restore from safe mode

If that doesn't work you're probably going to have to reinstall windows and drivers. If reinstalling windows doesn't work, there is a hard ware problem.

Well if none of the four choices worked (very unlikely) then you're screwed. you'll have to call in somebody to fix it
