Its very easy as you mentioned the error. You don't need to renew/install drivers. Your CD/DVD ROM is disabled from Device Manager. So just follow the following procedure:

First you need to go to Device manager.

* Right click on your 'My Computer' icon and click 'Manage', in pop-up menu.

* Select 'Device Manager' from the left column of the newly opened window.

* Now you'll see a list of devices in right column. Select the appropriate option, maybe 'DVD/CD-ROM drives'.

* Expand the list, then choose a drive having 'x' sign on it.

* You will see an icon on the top of the window. Looks like a pc with sign '_/' i.e., you call tick.

* Click this icon and you've enabled your cd rom. You can also click a neighboring icon for 'Scan for hardware changes'.

In the same way you can enable and disable any drive(s).

You can also traverse to 'Device Manager' by

Control Panel\System\Hardware\Device Manager.

If you have another computer to spare, you can test the drive in that... Otherwise, you might have to change the drive letter, or make a CD image out of it (using another dvd-rom) and get software that uses CD/DVD images as if they were REAL cd's. It's really effective. Give it a shot!

Turn off your p.c. and make sure that all the cables that connect the motherboard to the hard disks are securely connected. Also, take the initiative to clean your c.p.u. in case its very dirty inside. Start Windows in safe mode, with networking if possible. You can use the System Restore feature of Windows to get you back to time where everything is working fine. Check also if you have the most current drivers for your hard disks.
