I'm dual booting Ubuntu 7.10 and I just reinstalled Windows XP. GRUB is gone, so it only lets me boot into XP. It also won't let me view my linux partion on XP, just the windows partion. when I boot the live CD, I can still see all my files, but I can't edit them because I don't have permissions. any help?

Try to download norton partition magic. You will do that in a breeze.

Be careful here! One possible problem is that Windows likes - no, DEMANDS- to be on the first partition; if you put it anywhere else you may run into problems.

Secondly, you don't have to buy any software; just download GParted from http://gparted.sourceforge.net/livecd.php or use your Ubuntu CD to reinstall Grub to the MBR (Master Boot Record). From this point it can get tricky so I included this website as a guide: http://www.geocities.com/epark/linux/grub-w2k-HOWTO.html. The trick is that when you edit GRUB you have to make sure that the lines which read "hd (x,x)" point to the correct sector; if they don't then you'll never be able to boot into that sector.

Assuming you want to keep your linux partiton, do a google search and see how to reinstall grub - "ubuntu grub restore" would probably get you lots of info.

I recently saw that there is a driver for windoze that supposedly allows it to read ext2/3 partitions. Do another google search to see what you can find there.

Gparted can not resize or exchange any partition it fairly is in use (fastened). you are able to boot from a linux stay cd that has gparted (like ubuntu) and run gparted from the cd or burn gparted to a diverse bootable cd and run gparted from it.
