i am facing this problem from over a week now. when i open many processes ( like real player, games, moving files,) , task manager shows that my cpu usage is over 100% and suddenly my pc turns off in 2-3 minutes.
and when i restart it, it again turns off in couple of minutes. And when i start it after 5 minutes then only it starts. due to this i can't play games, open multiple browsers etc.

my pc spec-- ms windows xp professional- service pack 2, intel pentium d cpu 3.00ghz, 1 gb ram, gigabyte motherboard, video memory 128 mb, directx 9

Is it because of virus, overheating or what?
hope you guys solve it!

First off, if your PC is running at over 100% CPU usage it's a miracle working machine... you can NOT use more than 100% of anything!

Your problem is very likely down to defective cooling of the CPU. Either the fan is not running or is full of fluff or the heat conducting paste from the CPU to the heatsink is not working. Check for fluff and that the fan is working on the heatsink... and if this is not the cause, take it to a shop.

Repeated heat stress of your CPU will lead to early failure of your processor... and if it's caused by fluff in the heatsink your warranty won't cover it.

Go to the web page I put below and find Speedfan and download and install it. Monitor your temperatures to see if anything is getting particularly hot. I also have several malware programs to clean out your computer as well as a couple of good anti-virus programs. If your computer is getting hot, then the problem is probably dust, hair and dander clogging up your fans and heatsinks. Clean them out with some compressed air (you may want to do this outside...). You can also try re-applying the thermal paste between the heatsink and the CPU, but that shouldn't solve any serious overheating. It may drop your temps about 5 degrees, though. While you have the case open, check your motherboard for bad capacitors. Check out this site to find out what to look for:

Good luck.

Intel Pentium D CPU cant handle today's memory hungry software and applications.

buy a new Intel DG41TY motherboard with a matching Intel Core 2 Duo E7400 2.8GHz processor and put in 2 X1GB DDR2 800MHz RAM sticks and see the difference.

It sounds like overheating. Some computers their CPUs have built in fail safes that shut the computer down when the heat becomes too much.

What brand is it? If your computer is custom made then you can modify it yourself (or with a friend) easily. If it's not you can still do that but you have to be careful because some brands are easier to modify than others.

you must have to check the cpu temperature

one common reason why cpu restart is if the cpu can't hold the

temperature, you must add cooling fans if you are fun of games

or check your memory usage i think 1 GB of ram can't hold a heavy game, while playing music and transferring files;

you must add more ram for this

You'll want to install KB 927891 first, and then upgrade to the WSUS 3.0 update client (x86, x64)

Note: If this does not fix the problem for you, look for a service other than Windows Update that could be hiding under SVCHOST and scan your system for malware to ensure there isn't a virus active.

Definitely it should be due to some virus infection. If you can't succeed check if any loose connection in your motherboard, ram, etc.

It could be due to your computer over heating.
