Question:
Ram Issues?
2008-06-05 06:59:31 UTC
To make a long story short I had installed a new ram into my computer a few months back and it worked fine, but the thing is I recently put a new one in about a week ago?
So my computer started having issues yesterday; to the point where it actually crashed
so I figured it might have something to do with the ram chip because my computer kept restarting over and over and over; I removed the ram chips [new ones] and put in the old one it works fine
but when i put the old one and a new one it doesnt work works for a few minutes then crash so now I have to leave in just the old one! and it sucks!

Anyone know how I can solve this problem?
I'm thinking that I have to set the timings and voltage but I hope it's that easy; >.< It would suck if something is damaged

thanks in advance!

To rule out problems with the RAM , go to the link and download the free iso image of memtest and burn to cd. Boot from the cd and run a test. Good luck

you have to get the same speed in the new ram as what the original ram is

Count how many ram slots you have and take the original ram to the store and buy more the same speed. Some ram that suppose to work at backward compatable speed do not, if the computers power supply is a bit weak.

RAM and Virtual Memory check – Any OS that has XP type taskmanager

========================

Open up the internet to eg yahoo answers and have a few things open .(eg Word excel or a couple browser pages)

If you normally play music, play that. Close down anything else just for this test.

Open Task manager >performance tab

Look at the RAM usage in the physical memory (k). If you are using more than 60% of your RAM while your computer is only doing the above then there is not much left for video or games. You may need to install more RAM

1 Gig for XP, 2 Gig for Vista

Look at the PF usage. That is the virtual memory (Paging File). Your virtual memory minimum setting should be more than what is being used at this moment.

Your virtual memory maximum should be set to 1.5 times the amount of RAM you have. Eg 1 gig RAM, therefore 1.5 gig Virtual Memory

Right click my computer icon >properties > advance tab >performance settings > advance tab > virtual memory change > select the drive with the operating system on it (normally C:) bullet custom. Enter the max value as one and a half times the RAM you have.

Remember to have your minimum setting entry, more than what was being used in the test.

In this example, if Ram is 1 gig and the PF was using 360 Meg, then I choose 500 min and 1500 max. >set

Your computer is now set for optimum performance for the RAM you have.

Most likely, the ram you have (new) is either not the right speed, or is too much for your system. Remove the old sticks and look for the MHz number (266, 333, 400, etc.) Or a PC number like PC2700, PC4200, PC133..

You CAN step down 1 step with DDR RAM. But your fastest stick will only run as fast as your slowest stick. This could also be done with SDRAM but often resulted in blowing out the sockets.

You can not go down any more than one step. So if you have 3 ram modules, they all have to be within one step of each other. And that doesn't mean you can have a PC2700 and install a 2100 and a 3200 (which are 1 step in both directions).

Make sure your NEW RAM has the same numbers. If one has PC numbers and one has MHz numbers, Contact me and I'll help you determine what each ram stick is.

Also, it could just be bad ram, it's not uncommon or unheard of for RAM to be DOA.

ok first abode windows XP - abode windows XP Can use more effective than 2GB of ram except some processors and motherboards do not help that a lot ram or max out at this element. some thing over 2Gb isn't necessary as an celebration that is reserved for small servers 4gb and massive servers have 64gb+ in spite of the undeniable fact that 1GB of ram should be adequate to suffice maximum consumers 2GB of ram to make out your device in the adventure that your a hardcore gamer or do a good type of video enhancing abode windows xp has no complications utilizing it older operating device will freak like abode windows ninety 8 and stuff in spite of the undeniable fact that Vista - Vista itself is already operating 1/2 of 2gb basically by utilizing being on.. Make sure the RAM is compatible with your motherboard. If you go to a site like www.crucial.com and enter your system they will tell you the compatible modules.

You also can't mix and match. The modules have to be the same type.

usually the new motherboard using dual channel technology. that mean the memory that pluged in the motherboard are same/identical.

for your problem just bring your memory to the place that you bought and claim for warranty and if you can speak to the seller you buy to change it with the same memory brand on your motherboard.

download and use this software to identify your memory.

Sounds to me like you have the wrong ram type.

Are they the same? You can't mix DDR and DDR2. You also can't mix speeds that your pc can't read (i.e. your pc only reads PC4200 and you bought PC5300).
