Question:
Can I run an IDE & a SATA HD?

I've just ordered a new SATA hard drive. The hard drive I currently have is an IDE drive. I wouldn't figure but is there any problems running both IDE and SATA? I also am considering converting the IDE HD I have to SATA because I read SATA is faster than IDE. Is this true?

Thanks, Bill

usually yes. since nearly all optical drives are still using IDE, all motherboard manufacturers must install at least one IDE port and include 1 ide cable. this cable usually has 2 plugs, so you can install your cd and 1 other ide drive. they usually have to be in adjacent slots, however, which causes a problem since hd's are usually half size and cd's are full size.

if you are upgrading your computer, what i did was use the cd first to install windows, turn of the computer, unplug the cd, plug in the ide hd, transfer my old files, then plug the cd back in.

First of all, you should check to see if you have a SATA controller in your computer. Otherwise, you'll have to purchase an adapter, and any speed increase will be lost.

Secondly, yes, it is possible to use SATA and IDE drives at the same time.

Third, "converting" your existing IDE drive to SATA will not provide any speed increase, since the disk controller is still IDE (and therefore still slow). You can use an adapter to connect an IDE drive to a SATA controller, or a SATA drive to an IDE controller, but there will be no speed increase.

There should not be any problems running both IDE and SATA drives. There is no way you can convert an IDE hdd to SATA because the physical connections of IDE and SATA are different.

Yes, what you heard about the speed of SATA drive is correct. SATA drive is faster than IDE drive.

first off the sata drive is faster. yes there are adapters to go from ide to sata and vice versa. as for those people who are saying with ide slots you can only run 2 devices its not true as its possible to use 4 ide devices with just 2 slots providing you set the master/slave jumpers correctly.

If your motherboard supports both types, it shouldn't be a problem

Technically speaking, SATA supports higher throughput, but current hard drives can't make use of all this extra bandwidth, so the improvement would be slight.

An extra advantage to SATA of course is simpler cabling and better airflow. I'd keep the IDE drive until it becomes obsolete or dies.

If the puzzling disk is corrupted then it actually won't boot. you won't be in a position to repair the puzzling disk by utilising urgent F11 for the duration of boot(which restores the HD and OS to unique in greater present day Dell desktops) - this could erase your archives. you could desire to format and setting up abode windows onto the IDE force. with any luck you're able to try this interior the Bios Configuration first by utilising reconfiguring your force Configuration. you could could desire to rejumper the IDE force with the intention to configure it from Slave to comprehend, yet with any luck it incredibly is jumpered as Cable-elect which might enable it to act as a grasp force at boot. you will could desire to get some abode windows XP media and boot from the CD-ROM. you could desire to set the boot series interior the Bios first, by utilising default many desktops are set to look on the CD-ROM first. setting up abode windows as a clean setting up onto the IDE force partition. The Blue Menu for the duration of setup could tutor you each and all of the attainable actual disks and partitions... you could then be waiting to ascertain the SATA force simply by fact it incredibly is now no longer the boot force. with any luck it incredibly is basically the OS it incredibly is corrupted, in any different case it may say Invalid Media or Disk no longer known. sturdy success
