I play battlefield 4, skyrim, and fallout new vegas. Will I need a 8gb 980 or should i just grab the 4gb? I ask this because My skyrim is the game I play the most, and I mod the crap out of it. I use K ENB pure light, several texture mods that change roads, signs, and flora, many character texture mods, etc etc. It turns Skyrim to a very VERY demanding game.

4GB will do fine for modded Skyrim. I actually own a GTX 970 4GB and run the same ENB mod as you as well as other graphical mods and I notice a little of bit of skimps that go around 40 fps but nothing serious or unplayable.

Getting a 4GB should do you good.

the memory size of the graphics card will depend on how many monitors your using and at what resolution.

if your using 1 monitor 1920x1080 the 4GB version will be more than enough.

if your using 2 monitors 4GB should be enough.

if your using more than 2 monitors you should go for the 8GB version.

at higher ingame settings, games require more graphics memory to load up commonly used textures, the higher the resolution or the more monitors you have you will require more memory on the graphics card to load up a lot more higher resolution textures.

most games will load up a set of commonly used textures into the graphics memory (the size will depend on game and ingame settings) and then as you play will load others off of the HDD, this is the way most games work because they cater to a wider range of gamers on all machines that might not be upto the job as well as a high end gaming machine. if you have more monitors the game requires more memory to load up bigger or more textures.
