Hey.. brands don't really matter in my opinion.

I would recommend you make sure you get a 64 bit processor (such as the 64 bit AMD sempron for basic computing or 64 bit AMD athlon for hard core compting.)

Of course if your the kind of person to get a new computer every year it will not matter as much, but if your going to want to use this computer for some time to come.. all computers will be going 64 bit in the next few years I think, so if you get it now you will be all set for the future AND it's not that much more expensive, if at all.

For good value in a budget laptop (relatively low cost systemrs for general uses, including photo editing), go for:

Compag Presario V5000Z.

It offers lots of features for the money, including memory card slots and a FireWire port. It's slightly heaiver than the other budget models. The Compag brand's reliablity has been undistinguished, and its technical support rated among the lowest.

i like hp the service is very good. they sell them at sams club and circuit city as well as best buy and even target. be sure to get one you can expand, look at how much memory it has 512mb and up is good. check max memory some max out at 1gb others will hold up to 4gb ram. windows media pc runs a version of win xp pro and is better than the other versions. how large is hard drive ? these days no less than 80gb is acceptable 160 and up is better. video is built in or card ? cards are better since they usually do not share memory and are easily replaced when you want to upgrade. be sure if it is not at least the minimums it can support the upgrades, when vista is released it will need the resources. apple is the best and is ccompatable with windows software now check out the local apple store. firewire also known as EEE1394 is essential as well as usb, card readers built in are very nice to have. double layer dvd writer is a must, lightscribe is a plus.

My suggestion? Get a mac mini. they're approximately $500 greenbacks, and have like 2gb of RAM and an excellent processor with an excellent difficult force. Assuming that is for place of work artwork, this could be your suited wager. you need to purchase slightly adapter element which you may use to hook up your present day video exhibit to, so no choose for a undeniable mac video exhibit. wish i helped! Lemme understand in case you choose any extra effective help.
