The first thing I would do is make sure you have antivirus/firewall from a reliable vendor like mcafee.. make sure it is enabled, configured, and properly automatically updating.. try a forced update and perform a complete scan of the computer.

You might also want to get a good antispyware program like spybot S&D from http://www.safer-networking.org

to ensure you aren't bogged down by that stuff.

I wouldn't install anything else tho.

You'll want to check the CPU speed and the amount of RAM the computer has. Right-Click on the My Computer icon >> properties >> on the general tab that comes up first it should tell you CPU speed in ghz and RAM in mb or gb

If the CPU is very slow you'll probably just want to get a new computer.

If the RAM is just low, you can usually upgrade it.

If browsing the internet is slow then that would mainly be from your ISP.. their speed and possibly the ISP speed of the websites you're going to.

You can try clearing the browser cache and defragmenting the harddrive but these do not do much... they may just make things go a tad teensy tiny bit smoother.

You might want to check how many programs and services are running in the background. Turn off any flashy splashy windows themes.

Definitely check the amount of free harddrive space left on the harddrive. If yu are running out of space this can make windows run slow and then begin to crash until it basically won't be able to run at all. You can upgrade a harddrive.

Good Luck.

Adding more memory might slightly increase your speed, but it's processing power that counts the most. Most likely you will not be able to find a faster processor that fits your motherboard and older memory is increasingly harder to find and more expensive.

If speed is important to you, you should just buy a new computer. There are many basic ones under $500, that even if not optimized, will still run faster than your 6 year old computer.

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some regsitry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Everytime you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Regisry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically! It even can speed up your computer by 300% or more!

There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

You did not give any detail about the computer so we can't tell if the processor is fast or how much ram on the computer or the video card. those tree things are very important for playing songs you have to have fast processor good video cad and a lot of ram up grading those will cost about 4 to 5 hundred dollars. if you spend that money on this commuter you will be trying to feed a dead horse.

Computers have improved so much over the last few years that your best choice might be buying a new one, instead of wasting your time trying to fix up a six year old computer. the average living time for a computer is 3-5 years, so you're over that.

Any dell computer is a great, high quality computer. Also, if you go to their website they provide recommendations for what you should buy for what you need. Usually, the more expensive it is, the faster it is and also higher quality.

If you really want to avoid buying new one, scan your computer for viruses and spyware, make sure that your computer is protected from them too (get Antivir and Windows Defender) and clean up temp. files (get Cleanup!)

A very good decision would be to reformat your hard drive and get the software from above. to find out how to do that, go to: http://www.ehow.com/how_6026_format-hard-drive.html

****make sure you have the disks to reinstall the operating system.
