Just a quick question,
im getting a computer with a phenom X3 triple core 8450 with an asus bios, thermaltake silent copper cooling, 750 watt ps, blah blahb blah.. lol basically, i just need to know
would i be better off using the bios in my motherboard (its asus, so itll let you manually control speeds) or would i be better using AMD Overdrive Overclocking utility???

thanks!:)

You need to overclock each part seperately...

First lower your ram speed, then overlock the cpu.

Lower your cpu multi, then overclock the ram.

then overclock your graphics card, and put all 3 together.

I usually use bios setting because you may need to increase voltage. I prefer to do this at start up and not stress the hardware by using software to tweak, although I have done both.

Software is easier to test your limits with, your asus bios is easier to push the limits and create a more stable system.

each part will have its limit. Push the cpu til it becomes unstable, then increase the voltage 1 step. re-test. dont volt too high. I usually go up 1 step only in voltage, I want my cpu to last.

You can then see which performs the best together with benchmarks and what you need.

I usually increase my core, then overclock the ram to its limit. Then use software to overclock my graphics card, and you're ready for gaming. Make sure you leave the fans turned up BEFORE overclocking.

Thumbs Down Eric J for saying stupid **** likes hes a pro.. I dont care how old you are, give some suggestions or stfu "pro"

BIOS overclocking requires you to do all of the math, you also need to understand what settings actually do what, accidentally setting your multiplier to 3000 thinking that it is your clock speed would definitely be a fatal mistake. I would stick to AMD overdrive, this will allow you to make changes on the fly and monitor temperatures while you do it assuming you have a case with temp sensors. The down side to overdrive though would be when you finally hit the wall, if you hit the wall on the BIOS you can simply clear the CMOS and back off a little but in software you are usually talking about silently modifying registry keys so the changes will follow with every boot, chances are I doubt you want to reinstall Windows every time you try a new setting.

I think its ATI overdrive you are referring to and that is for overclocking ati video cards. If you want to overclock you processor You should always use your bios especially if you have asus they are one of the best companies out there, I dont even think video cards can be overclocked in any bios. CPU's can be overclocked from windows and motherboard applications but no smart overclocker would ever overclock seriously through them, Bios is the way to go and might I suggest Rivatuner for video cards unless you have Nvidia that came with a tool such as EVGA Precision. ATI overdrive is very basic and wont let you overclock very well.

well the amd overdrive is just the lazy way to overclock and you wont get the results you demand just do it in the bios like all the pros like me cause im so pro... yer pro at 16
