I read somewhere that if you run multicore cpus on XP home edition, then all the cores will be deactivated in the OS except 1 core. Is this true?

nope. i have xp home edition and running a dual core pc. simple check is to ctrl+alt+delete and go to performance tab. it should show two cores working.
