2007-07-30 16:03:11 UTC
i was just wondering is there a website i can look at that shows you how to use the keyboard fully without the help of a mouse! we depend so much on the mouse but just incase it doesn't want to work.....or you can just type it all out here on yahoo answers...
please don't make smart remarks on me being dumb or getting a new mouse ( i am gonna buy another one but for the meantime i need to use this computer now).....i do know about computers but i am no expert.
my mouse is working but i can tell that its starting to break down or something, and would suck if it were to not function completely!
help...and i thank you for answering in advance. oh yeah and i have a desktop which is why i am concerned about the mouse thing.

Microsoft has great references on using your keyboard only. To be honest, I use my keyboard way more often than I do my mouse. It's just faster!

Most mouse functionality can be replaced by a variety of keyboard shortcuts. These shortcuts vary from program to program. However, most Microsoft programs use a fairly standard set of shortcuts to get you started:

Alt-tab pressing both of these buttons together will cycle through your open windows. Hold down alt and press tab until the icon for the window you want opens.

Ctrl-tab some programs (such as firefox and IE 7) allow you to open multiple instances within a single window. Switch between these tabs using ctrl-tab in much the same way you use alt-tab.

The "windows" button opens up the start menu.

alt - alt by itself will activate the taskbar at the top of the screen (where it says "file edit view etc." Use the arrow keys to navigate in this context.

tab - by itself switches between different fields and options within a window. For example, on the "Google" main page, the cursor starts off in the text bar. Pressing tab once will highlight the "google search button". Pressing it again will highlight "I'm feeling lucky". Press it several more times, and it will eventually reach the url bar at the top so you can type in a new page.

ctrl-x - cut

ctrl-c - copy

ctrl-v - paste

ctrl-z - undo

You can use the help functionality in most other programs to find more shortcuts.

Here's some quick tips:

You can use the start key to open the start menu, then the arrow and enter keys to select.

You can use the alt key to put the selector on the menus at the top of the page.

You can use the tab key to move between fields and buttons on a page.
