Since my laptop crashed, it had to be reinstalled and when I got it back I noticed there were new icons in my desktop that I previously didn't have: My Documents, My Network Places and My PC. I find it pointless to have them there, and was wondering what will happen if I delete them? Or is there any way that I can get rid of them? I'm worried something bad will happen if I do, because they are not shortcuts.

I would also like to change the icon of Internet Explorer but it isn't a shortcut, so I can't. Could I make a shortcut, change the icon and then get rid o the original IE icon?

If you delete those shortcuts, your computer will start throwing mini shurikens of death at other electronic devices in your home.

Just kidding!

Seriously though, if you right-click on the desktop, select Properties, click on the Desktop tab, and click on the Customize Desktop button, you can turn off those icons (and the standard icon for Internet Explorer).

Also, don't forget your updates - make sure that you're running Windows with the latest patches, MSIE 8, Windows Media Player 11, and whatever anti-virus and anti-malware software you usually run. Also, consider alternative browsers like Firefox (which is a little safer than MSIE) and Chrome (which is much safer than MSIE or Firefox). And remember that no matter how much you keep your computer up to date, you can always get something on it, so practice safe browsing habits.

Well it is always safe to remove any desktop icon. You can find My Documents, and My Network Places all in the Start menu as well as everything on your computer. Also if you don't have an IE shortcut on your desktop and would like one, go into the Start menu, locate IE and right click, select Create Shortcut or Send To> Desktop. This applies on XP, Vista, and Windows 7.

I also highly suggest downloading Firefox instead of using IE as your browser. Or you could try Google Crome browser but a lot of programs don't like Crome.
