Windows 2000 Professional - experts only PLEASE!...................?

And no upgrade to xp please. For me, this is an upgrade.
I had Millenium, too many problems. Had computer shop install 2000 pro and it says 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195. Does this have C/Windows/Winnit/System32? Because I looked and I do not have a Windows file, just the Winnit file. (I only ask because I was told to download a file to there, a .dll file) Anyway, when I looked, the .dll file I needed was in the winnit folder.
Is it possible he did not install it correctly? When I turned the computer on I got a message that CPU is unworkable or has been changed. PLease recheck CPU soft menu. F1 to continue or something else to enter setup. I'm not touching anything. Someone suggested typing in run box msconfig, then go to boot.ini to see he correctly installed it over the ME. I get the red X that says Cannot find msconfig (or one of its components) Make sure path & filename are correct and all required libraries are available. Outta room. Details later after post

It sounds to me like they gave you and evaluation copy, usually only good for 120 days. Is 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 Build 2195 displayed on your desktop? Microsoft usually doesn't display build versions after the OS is officially released. As far as the winnt folder goes, that's perfectly normal. Windows 2000 was built on the Windows NT kernel. And I'm sorry, but whoever told you to look at boot.ini is wrong. boot.ini is what tells the computer where to find the operating system(s). I would take it back to the "repair" shop, and ask them why they think they can pull one over on you.

Win2k doesn't provide msconfig.

You can down load it. Actually I'd suggest that you install Spybot Search and Destroy, use the advanced setting, in Tools there are several tools that offer more functionality than msconfig.

Winnt is the windows folder for win2k

You can get to the boot.ini by clicking Start, Run, type BOOT.INI, Enter, if it says it can't find it, Click brouse and select drive c, Run it again.

Seen about every weird message windows has to offer but guess I've missed one. The BIOS for whatever reason is not identifying your CPU (the chip) correctly. The fix could be as simple as pressing the DEL key and looking at the BIOS. Esc, F10, Y. Or it could be that you Computer tech needs to take a second look.

Wow it looks like several answers on here you should avoid.



First off 5.0.2195 Service Pack 4 is EXACTLY what you should see for an up to date Windows 2000 Professional machine.



Second Windows can actually be installed to any directory, but the defaults are C:\Windows for most versions, but not for Windows NT or Window 2000, where the default is C:\WinNT.

So this is also exactly right. If something says to put a file in the "Windows" system32 directory the directory you want is C:\WinNT\system32.



It sounds like there is nothing wrong with your Windows 2000.



Now on the CPU problem. This sounds like your BIOS is complaining about your CPU (Not Windows, Windows is not running at this point). What it wants you to do is going the BIOS setup screen to correct the problem. For instance on the BIOS screen there will be an advanced screen that allows for setting things like the clock speed for the CPU and for the memory. It sounds like one of these is wrong. You could try to set this to the default settings, but since you had a shop do this for you, and they set it to something that is causing problems. I would take it back to them and show it to them and have them fix it. They did it wrong, they should fix it for free.



Also one more note about your problem. The computer detected that some setting in the BIOS is wrong, and will have temporarly set it to something that works. That is why you can bypass going into the BIOS setup and your computer still works, but the settings might not be the best, and so it is trying to get you to change them.

1. The stuff you are saying is way too broad, and could be anything.



2. Even though you said it, I still have to repeat it. Get XP. Windows 2000 Pro is outdated so much that XP is about to be outdated. This means technicians probably don't know what the hell they are doing with 2000, nor do a lot of people on Yahoo Answers. It as if you had the first made computer in the world, and you are asking on Yahoo Answers why your 20 year old computer doesn't work, and only asking for experts on that computer. You are not likely to find help.



3. Of course it's possible he didn't install it correctly.



4. As we all know, some hardware conflicts with Operating systems. But then again you did not include what type of CPU you have (but considering that you are opting for Windows 2000 and your old computer had Millenium on it, the CPU has to be ancient, so just based on that I could come to a conclusion that the cpu can't run 2000).



5.Why are you not going to touch anything? Like I said before, the reason I say get Xp is that with 2000, nobody will know. The ultimate consequence is that you yourself or the tech will have to find the answer. I wouldn't ever pay a tech to do anything anyway, so for me that would mean having to find the answer all on my own. So, unless you plan on paying someone to help you (the guy who upgraded should of did everything, if not call the place back, that is what you paid for right?), you can't afford to say I'm not touching anything. Try F1 to see where continue bring you to, which is also kind of weird because if the CPU didn't work, why would if have an option to continue? Continue where? so press F1 and see where it brings you. Try setup too. You will have to fiddle with tihngs.



6. Also, you said you had a computer shop install Windows 2000? How much did they cost you to do that? Because probably you paid for the software + labor on installing something so easy. You could of easily downloaded one of thousands of easy to follow tutorials in installing on your computer. I'm thinking Xp would of probably been cheaper by itself than whatever you paid. Instead, you paid for software + labor and you are still stuck, resorting to Yahoo Answers.



By the way who exactly asked you to download a .dll file there, the technician?



Like I said this is so broad it's hard to even start answering your questions. But like I said, at this point in the game, especially with software compatibility, virus's, and the amount of knowledge of Xp versus 2000 (if you had a problem with xp if would of probably been fixed by now), you would of probably been better off getting Xp. Even though money is tight nowadays, I would rather save up for XP rather than to get garbage Windows 2000 Professional. And I make minimum wage so trust me when I say, just get XP.

You paid for a service, use it. Don't be ashamed that you don't know something about computers. We all know stuff, and we all don't know stuff. Go back, ideally bring your computer with the plug, ideally they can hook it up and fix it, I would just leave it to them because to me, it's their problem, not mine.

I will answer your questions backwards: Firstly - Windows 2000 does not have msconfig. You can download it - just Google for msconfig for Win 2000.



My question to you - why do you need to install a .dll file? Cleaning a virus and it was taken out?



If you have the installation CD - you could try the repair option.

If the CPU is unworkable with your new OS then you probably have insufficient hardware on your PC. When you are dealing with upgrading OS, it is not all about system folders are aligned, you need to have the minimum hardware specs to run the system. you may want to try restoring your pc to an early point, or run it in safe mode and see how that works. It still may be possible that it was installed incorrectly and you might want them to look it over again.

Lady, you need a WIN 2000 install DISK!



You need to put that disk into your computer

and delete all data on the hard drive, then reinstall WIN 2000!



You do not want any type of UPGRADE!

Issues with WIN 2000! You almost have to be a systems person to handle the issues!

XP PRO is a hundred times simpler for the non computer person to work with!

plain and simple if u paid for it u might as well go back to the person or shop and tell them exactly what u wrote. trust me no ones going to think your dumb.plus if it has a warranty u shouldnt break your head just trying to fix it yourself when u obviously recieved a computer working right.

I have a copy(authenic) of 2000. I found that the first instilation never worked. Always had to do it twice. After that no problems. PS..I can't explain why.
