I have a website that I need to make for a school project, and I don't want to have to carry around the flash drive with the HTML file on it, so I followed this tutorial on how to setup my own server:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-rKDhZJignU&feature=related
However, I would like to know if it is safe to do.... I REALLY don't want my computer getting hacked by trolls online.

So my question stands, is this a bad or good idea?

If you know how to properly configure your system, if you know how to properly set up a web server, if you know how to maintain a system and network, if you know how to secure your network properly, if you know how to configure your router properly, et cetera, then it is a good idea. If you have doubts with any of these, then no, it is not a good idea.

Hosting a dedicated web server on your own hardware is very complicated. If you want a to host a website that is reliable, secure, and fast, you cannot just install a program computer and expect things to work out. You would need dedicated hardware, a fast connection, server software (apache, php, mysql) and more- not to mention a lot of experience. It is safe if you know what you are doing.

Quick answer: NO - do not do it.

If this is just for a school project, try some free services like

Cwahi

Freewebs

Tripod

Try hostgator for free 6 month using $50 rebate and 1 cent first month coupon

Hostgator is the best in price to services, I use Hostgator and they have the cPanel which you could install wordpress, super great customer service who reply to my email in minutes and very knowledgeable staff. Good uptime Guarantee unlike other hosting company who say Guarantee but don't follow through. Plus they have great promotion such as 20% off or $0.01 cent for first month offer, plus a $50 rebate, which can be found at http://poormoney.com/hostgator-50-rebate/

No, i wouldnt recommend because i once with temerity ran my web sites on my own server, then due to pressing security and stability issues, i shifted my hosting to http://www.thewebpole.com/ since now a days most of the hosting companies offer very cheap hosting
