For running slow there are many causes:

Microsoft Registry Problems = Slow Computer!

Spyware/Adware

RAM

De-Fragmenting

Etc.

Below can help you speed up your pc:

For IE, click Tools, Internet Options delete files (offline files) clear history (set days to save to 0 if you want) click o.k., and Restart

For Firfox, press ctrl+shift+del, and click clean private data.

Manage your startup:

Open your Start menu -> Click Run -> In the command screen type "msconfig.exe" -> In the "system configuration utility", click either "service" or "startup" tab -> Uncheck all programs that your are no longer using.

De-Fragmenting

1. Right click of C Disk.

2. Click properties.

3. Click tools tab.

4. Click "Defragment now".

5. Click Defragment.

You can search which process full use you cpu, and end the process.

Under steps:

1. right click on the TaskBar.

2. click the Task Manager.

3. click the processes tab.

4. double click the CPU.

5. find if the "System Idle Process" is max.

Well you would substitute the weaker components. It's viable you HDD is clogged up with more than a few crap like plenty of records, viruses, vain systems and whatnot. In that case it is well to scrub up, run a whole virus experiment and a tough disk defragmentation. Though, it is less complicated when you simply structure. Another alternative is purchase an notable cooling process or arise with a few revolutionary approaches to chill your pc, then overclock the processor. But you will have to watch out not to overheat it. "Cold" desktops participate in so much greater than ones that get sizzling.

OK

[ What details do we know about your PC now, its got enough ram and it has a large hard drive.... and it is slow.. and you want it fast.]

I assume though that you want to do it for very little or no cost with the exception of your time. this is understandable.

Correct me if I am wrong , what you want to do is make a slow PC as efficient as it can be, getting all the power it has to mussel up to your game

There are a few things you can do

#1 .........no matter what op-sys you are using, reinstall it and strip it down to its lightest weight. get rid of all the non gaming components.

Deleting or Un-installing previously installed programs like office, old games, etc will not work. Your registry will have to much junk in it and so will the rest of you hard drive. you must reinstall your op-sys. (Be sure it is new and stripped down.)

Doing just this could make your slow PC more than 100 - 500 % more efficent., depending how dirty and bulky it is maybe more. Meaning to you.............. A Faster PC ! !

#2... this would depend on other unknowns, that being your hardware. That is to hard to guess about but you probabley will post that as your next question and get more answers. That said the next thing to do is get that info and ............ post it for your next question

Most of the answers here are pretty good, but we are not going to change any hardware yet and that leads us to back to software.

Just as I said Perfectest says " Microsoft Registry Problems = Slow Computer! " but here is the problem....

Registery cleaners often dont work as well as planned. The registry is very complex and critical to your pc's performance and the sligthest error can cause grave problems or even disable your pc completely.

Registry Cleaner programers know this too and to protect there products good reputation they don't make it do things that risk causing you problems. Things like really get your registry clean and efficent ! Some of them are ok, in that they clean know problems. but .........

If you want a really clean and efficent registry "Re-Install your op-sys"

By the way, there is a program (don't recall its name) that will assist you in removing what is normally not removable Windows XP components. With these components removed your pc dosent have to spend time searching through them, that means more efficency and that equals more speed.

You could think of it like this:

The smaller the jockey, the faster the horse can go

Another advanced trick you can do is to partition your large hard drive, but that is yet another story

Do it, you will be notice the increase in performance

Good Luck

Increase the amount of memory. Look in the manual for your comps specs, and check the memory. Then buy the same memory model and have a professional install it for you. Your computer should speed up dramatically depending on the amount of memory you put in.

1st- Uninstall any programs that you don't use

2nd- Scan your computer for viruses and errors

3rd- Defrgment your Hard drive

Optional:

Get more RAM (memory) Make sure that you don't exceed that amount that your computer can handle. (there are programs that can tell you the most amount of RAM your computer can handle, so google search it)

You coluld reinstall the oprating system (make sure that you have the product key or regstratrion key so that when you reinstall it you have the key to make it useable)

Look for better parts that your computer is compatable with (CPU, power supply, RAM, Video and sound card, ect.)

Hope this helps!

lets see... there are a lot of things you can do, the best thing would be to reinstall windows, but if you aren't willing to do this, then defragment your disk, and use disk cleanup to clean unnecessary files. you can get these by right clicking your hard drive and clicking properties, then tools tab. actually, the best would be to install ubuntu, because it is much faster than windows in my opinion.

Add memory, defrag the hard drive, remove any program, that you dont use, from starting up, and use basic setting for visual appearance.

Well it depends on how much memory is used up. I would suggest Defraging it and delete all the stuff you do not use.
