Without formatting and without upgrading? Your computer is probably what, 6 years old? The average usability of a machine is 5-7 years. Knowing that, without spending any money, try this:

Click Start, then run. Type msconfig. Hit ok. Go to the startup tab. Click disable all. Click apply, then okay. It will ask you to restart. Restart your computer. When it gets to the desktop, it will give you a message saying stuff has changed. Click the check box then click okay so it doesn't come back again.

This will disable all extra start-up programs. Some of those you may use, but to truly improve performance, only start up what you need, AFTER the OS has loaded.

Another suggestion that takes a bit longer, defragment your system in safe mode. This will help to organize the OS files a little more neatly. Turn your computer off. Wait 30 seconds. Turn it back on and as soon as you push the power button, repeatedly tap the F8 key. It will bring up a menu, and you need to choose "Safe Mode". You'll see a bunch of scrolling text, then a long pause. Then a black screen for a while. Eventually, you'll see your desktop extra large, with no background image. (Don't worry, it will come back after you reboot). Open My Computer, then right click your hard drive. Go to properties. Then click on tools. Click Defragment Now... let the defrag program load, then click defragment. Let it run for a while (probably at least an hour or so, maybe more). When it's finished, Restart your computer.

Those are really the few "free" ways to speed up your computer. But really, you should get some RAM. It's super-cheap these days (less than $50 for HUGE speed increases). Check out crucial.com or newegg.com to buy it online.

The best way is to download Ccleaner here http://bitly.com/UrALrK

Or you can go on Windows operating system locate the command prompt and go there to do the following:

Create a Recovery file of system and date it today.

Then begin by;

delete the 'Temp' folders..they have hidden subfolders so you need to set the attributes in order to bypass this. For each subfolder delete all cookies and rubbish left behnd after install-uninstalled programs. Do a 'dir' command to check your progress. Make sure the 'Temp' file is empty.

goto c:\windows\prefetch and delete everything in there..no exceptions

goto c:\windows folder and delete all the '$' files that have been installed by updates. They can all be succesfully deleted and just take up disk space.

Locate the Internet Temporary Files..Check to see how high the saving level is..some have it set at 30 days..but that stores faaaar tooo much data..though it slows down the system overal. Keep this to a minimum..suggest 2 or 5 at most.

Delete all 'cookies' all those you don't need.

Locate the windows directory and go through the folders you know and those you don't need. Check this once a week at least. Some programs will install under XP as NT and older systems where there is no check of systems weight.

Check to see that system files have not changed since last booting. Things like .ini files or .bat are important items.

Check for 'Hidden Directories' all over the disk...do this at the command prompt:

dir *.* /ah wil show these hidden directories

Check the 'dir' command for all parameters

248 RAM...? Without even asking what kind of combination you used to get it, assuming you don't mean 256... you need more. 1 GB is the standard, and it's so cheap it isn't even funny. Get that. Also, it really depends on what kinds of applications you run. Aside from the standard RAM improvement, you can't expect to run high-end games with your current configuration - same goes for hardcore graphics applications.

Now assuming you only use your computer for older games and basic windows functions, your pc might be cluttered with viruses, spyware and other trash. Run Antivir, Adaware, CC Cleaner and JFK Defrag (in that order - they're all free and easy to download and use - just follow the instructions) to clean up your pc. That should fix it.

I would really recommend that you upgrade the RAM in your system, then you will have an adequate system...to work with.

In case you don't want to upgrade, go for a lighter O.S. maybe Linux or XP,

and most importantly tone down the visual effects of your system,

to do that go to MY COMPUTER

Right Click----> select PROPERTIES

then goto ADVANCED tab

select SETTINGS under PERFORMANCE

and there select ADJUST FOR BEST PERFOMANCE

don't use a wallpaper, as your ram has to store it too, the bigger and more vibrant colors your wallpaper has, the more it effects your system.

Using a registry cleaner can clean up your computer and then make your computer faster,Why?the reason is that there may be some registry errors and remnant, corrupt files and temp files in your computer to cause "computer slow".

Every time you install and uninstall software on your computer and surfing online you create junk in the computer registry.over time, the registry can grow to enormous proportions, especially if the various programs you've installed do not do a good job of deleting and/or updating it's Registry entries. You need to scan and clean your computer with registry cleaner to make it fast.Good Registry Cleaner will improve your computer and Internet performance dramatically!

There are some comparison and review of TOP 5 registry cleaners.

Apart from some of the good suggestions above, I suggest to remove some of the unwanted Fonts. You can find very similar fonts. You can backup those fonts and delete them from C drive. We never use some of the fonts. You can remove similar software also. For example if you have Picasa and Irfanview installed in you computer, one software does the job. You can remove the other, of your choice. You can disable most of the services, if your computer is a standalone one. For example automatic updates.

It's a very good program and easy to use.

I hope it helps

5 ways to speed up your PC

By following a few simple guidelines, you can maintain your computer and keep it running smoothly.

*Free up disk space

*Speed up access to data

*Detect and repair disk errors

*Protect your computer against spyware

*Learn all about ReadyBoost

1.Free up disk space

By freeing disk space, you can improve the performance of your computer. The Disk Cleanup tool helps you free up space on your hard disk. The utility identifies files that you can safely delete, and then enables you to choose whether you want to delete some or all of the identified files.

Use Disk Cleanup to:

• Remove temporary Internet files.

• Remove downloaded program files (such as Microsoft ActiveX controls and Java applets).

• Empty the Recycle Bin.

• Remove Windows temporary files.

• Remove optional Windows components that you don't use.

• Remove installed programs that you no longer use.

Tip: Typically, temporary Internet files take the most amount of space because the browser caches each page you visit for faster access later.

To use Disk Cleanup

i) Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Cleanup. If several drives are available, you might be prompted to specify which drive you want to clean.

ii)In the Disk Cleanup for dialog box, scroll through the content of the Files to delete list. Choose the files that you want to delete.

iii)Clear the check boxes for files that you don't want to delete, and then click OK.

iv)When prompted to confirm that you want to delete the specified files, click Yes.

After a few minutes, the process completes and the Disk Cleanup dialog box closes, leaving your computer cleaner and performing better.

2.Speed up access to data

Disk fragmentation slows the overall performance of your system. When files are fragmented, the computer must search the hard disk when the file is opened to piece it back together. The response time can be significantly longer.

Disk Defragmenter is a Windows utility that consolidates fragmented files and folders on your computer's hard disk so that each occupies a single space on the disk. With your files stored neatly end-to-end, without fragmentation, reading and writing to the disk speeds up.

When to run Disk Defragmenter

In addition to running Disk Defragmenter at regular intervals—monthly is optimal—there are other times you should run it too, such as when:

• You add a large number of files.

• Your free disk space totals 15 percent or less.

• You install new programs or a new version of Windows.

To use Disk Defragmenter:

i)Click Start, point to All Programs, point to Accessories, point to System Tools, and then click Disk Defragmenter.Click Analyze to start the Disk Defragmenter.

ii)In the Disk Defragmenter dialog box, click the drives that you want to defragment, and then click the Analyze button. After the disk is analyzed, a dialog box appears, letting you know whether you should defragment the analyzed drives.

Tip: You should analyze a volume before defragmenting it to get an estimate of how long the defragmentation process will take.

iii)To defragment the selected drive or drives, click the Defragment button. Note: In Windows Vista, there is no graphical user interface to demonstrate the progress—but your hard drive is still being defragmented. After the defragmentation is complete, Disk Defragmenter displays the results.

iv)To display detailed information about the defragmented disk or partition, click View Report.

v)To close the View Report dialog box, click Close.

vi)To close the Disk Defragmenter utility, click the Close button on the title bar of the window.

3.Detect and repair disk errors

In addition to running Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter to optimize the performance of your computer, you can check the integrity of the files stored on your hard disk by running the Error Checking utility.

As you use your hard drive, it can develop bad sectors. Bad sectors slow down hard disk performance and sometimes make data writing (such as file saving) difficult, or even impossible. The Error Checking utility scans the hard drive for bad sectors, and scans for file system errors to see whether certain files or folders are misplaced.

If you use your computer daily, you should run this utility once a week to help prevent data loss.

To run the Error Checking utility:

i)Close all open files.

ii)Click Start, and then click My Computer.

iii)In the My Computer window, right-click the hard disk you want to search for bad sectors, and then click Properties.

iv)In the Properties dialog box, click the Tools tab.

v)Click the Check Now button.

vi)In the Check Disk dialog box, select the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors check box, and then click Start.

vii)If bad sectors are found, choose to fix them.

Tip: Only select the "Automatically fix file system errors" check box if you think that your disk contains bad sectors.
