Question:
Why does my computer keep failing to install windows updates?

It just randomly started. My computer will still search for updates but it won't install them. I have 35 updates that need installing, and if I were to shut down my computer, it would say: "installing 22 of 35 updates" Then it'd shutdown without finishing the updates. It would do the same if I were to start it up, but afterwards it's say: "Failed to install updates. Reverting changes." Then it'd restart.

I have no idea what is going on, but if somebody could help me out, I would really appreciate .

I have a similar problem. It got better when I started using Internet Explorer rather than other browsers but still one or two problems. So I set to advise me of updates but not to do anything about them. I then "swipe" accross the list with th mouse and copy and paste to a text file. Then one at a time I paste each "update" into the search window to find the item on Microsoft's site. Then select and download to my computer. One of the things to bear in mind is that sometimes the download adviser cannot always distinguish between 32 & 64 bit systems, so it hangs when it chooses the wrong one.

So in short, stop auto, copy the list, use IE and download manually. Poppa

PS once they are on your system, save them out to disk so you have them for another time if needed.

You don’t say what OS system you are trying to update. Let’s assume its XP, and then your problem will probably be that you haven’t installed SP1 yet, check this in your updates record. There is a problem (sometimes) in this update going in correctly; this is because MS will not support it now. However you can search (Google) “Microsoft XP Service Pack 1 SP1” you should find someone that has it as a download.

In short you must have SP1 installed before your later updates to go in...its not good enough to have SP2 without SP1
