Just a week ago, my cd-drive started acting up, closing and opening on its own, I tried to google for solutions but nothing really works. I scanned my computer using my anti virus (avast) nothing came up. I use adaware and still nothing came up, I cleaned my registry, defrag, disk clean up and all. I unisntalled the driver and reboot to reinstall it but nothing seemed to work. I'm getting desperate. What else should I do?

Perhaps someone decided to pull a prank on you? I've heard many cases where a VBScript file can be used to continuously open/close the CD drive until the computer was shut down; say it's put in start up, and then you have an annoying problem.

Check Task Manager and see if cscript.exe or wscript.exe is running. If it is, kill it. If not, I suggest you check take your CD drive to computer repair store; it's possible an internal mechanism inside the drive is broken.

I was facing the same problem with my Hp Windows 7 lappie which is about three years old. To fix the problem do the following:

1. Control Panel -> System and Security-> Action Center,

2. If you have Windows Defender installed, run that scan and any issues you were facing with a "phantom CD drive" should be resolved.

Your PC could have a TROJAN virus! I'm a computer tech and I've experimented with some of trojans. I have a couple of backdoor trojan programs that let's one person (hacker) control the other PC, which includes but not limited to: opening CD tray, drawing on the monitor, rebooting pc, deleting files, etc.

Solution: install a firewall right now! Try Comodo free firewall (I've used it for long time and using it now) from comodo.com or ZoneAlarm firewall (they have free version) zonealarm.com

See if problem persists after you install firewall. If it will stop, then you most likely had a virus.

Also download good free antivirus like AVG from avg.com or Avira from free-av.com

Good luck!

Opening?? On It's own? That I have never heard before. Mine closes, but I just grab it and pull it all the way out. It's not good for the gears at all but it's all I can do, except buy a whole new one so...
