Question:
Computer Black screens on start up?

So, pretty much the problem is my computer will blackscreen when I boot it up. It will show the Windows logo glowing and fluttering about for a few seconds and then just go black when you normally choose the user. The weird thing is I can still see and move the cursor around, just not do anything else.

I've tried going into safety mode, still doesn't work. ctrl+alt+del wont even pop up. I tried turning it off for awhile, leaving it on for awhile. Tried opening it up and dusting it. I can't figure out what to do.

This all started when I was playing Guild wars 2. Just screwing around in WvWvW, when it kept stuttering. I thought nothing of it until it completely froze. Windows started doing the "This program is not responded, end now?" stuff. I naturally clicked end now, until I realized even that was frozen. I then tried opening task manager, started ending things, but then THAT froze too.

I was finally greeted by Norton, telling me that Malwarebytes (My maleware removing program) is using a high amount disk space. I attempted to end that and any other background program. Eventually the entire computer has frozen and crashed. I let it sit for a bit before pressing the power button.

If you have any idea why this is happening, and even better if you know how to fix this WITHOUT paying 100 bucks, I will forever be in your debt.

Computer: Dell Studio XPS 8100, Windows 7, 6GBs RAM, 350w PSU, GeForce 310

Pull the hard drive on this thing, and scan it for virus in another machine.

Or take it to a pro, and let them do that for you.

Dear Sneaky T,

Rohit might have the correct answer.

No matter what you do ad the nother pc with your harddrive, check it with command prompt ad bureau-accessoires.

Start Windows Explorer or My Computer, look there for the HDD drive letter like E/F and so on.

Nou start command prompt and type: (driver letter): chkdsk /F

The disk will now be inspected for system and disk errors and when possible fixed.

You can check the memory ad F8 (?), there ad the bottum you can find a tool for checking the memory. Use the options and set it to maximum check, this will take a while.

I put your question ad my profile in the watchlist, I'll answer it later on.

Have to go, that's why.

This is a common problem that i myself have experienced a lot of times.

It occurs due to a sudden spin up (hdd activity spike) and in this case, you were playing a game.

and then suddenly , you might get an error and have to hard reboot and the next time , windows doesn't load properly.

What i did in my case was to press f8 and choose boot with last known working configuration.

If that doesn't work, unplug your PC , ground yourself by touching the metal insides of the cabinet and then unplug your ram modules , using an eraser , slowly clean the pins and then re-seat them back.

After that , unplug your HDD and plug it back in.

After that try powering it on after you have performed the steps above.Good luck :)
