get a win98se boot disk at www.bootdisk.com, boot your computer using it, at the DOS prompt type FDISK /FIXMBR and see if that solves your problem, if not then run FDISK again and see what it shows about your hadrdrives, if you have only one, then it should be shown as HD 0. delete the partitions completely starting with extended partitions. then try installing again. XP should think that you have a brand new HD since I did not tell you to create a new partition while in FDISK. also, you can do this very same thing from the XP CD when you boot using that, just look around when it asks you where you want to install to, you should see an option to delete existing partitions, delete them, and then create a new one and select the new partition you created and format it in the new screen you are taken to.



Also, I have read other accounts about people who tried to install Vista when other OS's were present and it left the computer completely unbootable. the MBR was completely messed up. you solve this by deleting all the partitions on your boot drive and create a new partition which forces a new MBR to be written. my first comment described how to do this manually without actually deleting existing partitions.
