Question:
USB ports suddenly stopped working?

While working on my desktop computer, it froze and I was forced to shut it down. Upon rebooting I discovered that my mouse and keyboard were not working. Upon further examination, none of my usb ports were working with anything. I cant do anything to the computer except turn it on and off since its impossible to use a computer without a mouse or keyboard. What should I do?

Sounds like you may have 1 of, or perhaps two problems.

1: The actual integrated circuitry of the USB interface is defective.

2: The drivers for the USB are "glitched"

*IF* your computer has PS2 ports you can use a keybaord/mouse you have or borrow some

Boot up, or boot in Safe Mode if you can't regularly and try restoring to an earlier date

IF the USb circuitry is indeed bad, you can buy a USB port expansion card.

Note: You may have to go into BIOS an disable the built-in USB interface if it interferes with the card or it prevents you from starting normally

What the other guy said. Also, try borrowing a non-USB powered mouse and keyboard if you have the round ports in the back with a simple diagram of a mouse/keyboard. That is what I have and I ended up going to the Dell website to download/install a chipset driver for my Dell. I think it was a chipset driver. It should say in your computers documentation. Again, another question without make/model of computer and without operating system. You might have a virus that knocked out the USB ports to begin with. I had a second Dell networked through a switch and used that one to fix the broken down Dell. Always handy to have two computers at home on the internet.

Try all of these - Restart Your Computer - Turn off and try again in a few hours (Or a day if you can) - Like the guy below said, Norton 369 does do this. Bring it in if it still don't work afterward.
