I am going to be building my first computer, and am wondering whether I need a PS2 keyboard and mouse to install the OS, or if a wireless keyboard and mouse would work.

NO! regardless what you are advised by others in her, wireless will not work! you can use ps2, you can use usb - but wireless need software communication! you cannot use wireless without first establishing communication protocol!

have look at wireless routers, switches, modems - all of them need either, network cable connection or have build in programming interface, be it ps2, db9, db25, rj45 or any other for programming, AFTER you programmed it, then and only then wireless will come to play...

for choosing primary boot device you need to access bios, you will have which KEY ON THE KEYBOARD!!! to use to access it, unfortunately - some cable is involved...

and yes, i do work (on/off - i study medicine...) with computers since 1964...

@Jamie the answer is no , there are no drivers set up for wireless keyboard and mouse the os must be installed before the wireless to work, just use a regular ps2 keyboard and mouse the bios should be set for dvd/cd drive to boot from when turning on the pc the first time before installing the os

No, bluetooth and 2.4Ghz (straight forward wireless connection) do no longer look the comparable, the two use specific technologies, bluetooth has customarily a extra helpful insurance and it wont intervene at the same time with your cordless telephone or your wireless router (you likely have any of those). fairly some the instruments available in the marketplace paintings with straight forward batteries (generally 2AA batteries), besides the indisputable fact that a number of them have rechargeable batteries. in case you're making plans to purchase a keyboard/mice ensure that if works with bluetooth and the 1st-fee business enterprise for instantaneous keyboards/mice is Logitech. wish this permits!

Most of the time wireless keyboard and mouse will work just fine.

You should be alright with your wireless setup. The newer operating systems have support for USB devices in their setup process.
