Boot Failure: System Halted?

Hi everybody,

I have a problem with my computer. It's a Dell Dimension 4400 (old I know) and is pretty laggy when I use it. Yesterday I started up the computer and it was fine, but last night a message popped up saying "disc error" or something like that... and then it told me to do the ctrl+alt+del command and when I did that, a message popped up saying "boot failure: system halted." I restarted the computer and got the same message.

does anybody know what's going on? Is my computer just old?
And I'm not very computer-savvy, so if you do have an answer, try to make it as simple as possible haha.

Thanks :D

"boot failure: system halted." = Corrupted operating system or hard drive failure. Since it is an old system, either is possible/probable.

1. You can try to do a repair installation of your operating system. Insert your OS disk in your optical drive and boot the computer. If it boots, then select the repair option (you'll see it if you pay attention to the screens). Let it do its thing, and the computer should return to normal.

2. You can try a full/clean installation of the operating system (You will loose all your current files and folders, etc.) Start as above (1) and let it do a reformat of the hard drive and install the OS.

3. If you can't repair or do an installation of the OS, then the hard drive is dead. This will require the purchase of a new hard drive and the installation of an operating system. After you get the new hard drive installed along with the OS, then you can try installing your old hard drive as a "slave drive" and see if you can retrieve your old files and folders.

Sounds like the hard drive might be preparing to fail. However, since it has never failed to boot, it could be a boot sector virus causing troubles. To be safe, I'd do a backup and start thinking along the lines of replacing the hard drive. Maxtor has a good program for transfering everything to a new drive and keeping it bootable. It comes with all their new drives. You can always transfer the old drive to an external case and turn it into a USB drive for backup. Oh yeah, and I always tell everyone...when weird stuff happens, open the case and blow out the dust. Dust can be an amazing issue. It can cause reboots, lock-ups, and total meltdown if you don't keep your system clean internally.

Hey bro!! Its not a big problem

Just your system is not recognizing your Hard drive

There are two solutions for this silly problem

1.While your system is booting you keep on hitting F2 without any gap.....Setup and configuration settings will popup on your monitor

Go to Boot by using Arrows in your Keyboard......

In that category you will have a setting known Booting sequences

You select the 1st Boot Sequence as Hard Drive

And exit the setup by saving the changes made.....

The computer restarts and now everything is normal.....nd ur r done!!!!!!!

If you confuse by all these things mentioned above,

2.just simply hit F8 in the setup and configurations menu........

It sets back all the settings to Default and you're Done!!!!!!!!
