Regarding transfering documents from one computer to another...(see details)?

My wife has a Dell bought in 2001, with non-writing CD and DVD drives. It has, of course, a 1.44MB floppy drive. If I get a new computer, is the 1.44MB floppy something I'll have to add to transfer documents?

I've heard of USB Memory keys. I'm sure a computer made in 2001 has a USB port...so would a USB key be able to plug into her computer and download documents for transfer?

If not, are there any other options?

Thanks!

1.44 MB is way too small, and most new machines comes without it, a USB key or USB Flash mem. get one its cheap and BIG up to 5 GB(1GB =1000MB) , and there is small ones like 128MB . if the old machine got a network card, get a crossover cable and connect the two machines, it will do a network for the 2 machines you can also share the internet connection, also you can get USB cable between the 2 machines that will do the same. with file and print sharing

and there is external storage hard drives through USB, as well as External USB DVD/CD Writers

For new computers, u will not need a 3.5" 1.44 floppy disk drive, as it is nowadays usually needed for maintenance, but there are also alternate ways for maintainance other than floppy disks that can be used when needed. Including USB Flash Drives. If a 2001 computer does have a USB slot, it wont usually have a USB 2.0 slot, so u cant use the full speed of the flash drive on ur wife's computer. You can also use Bluetooth to transfer files between both computers, which is actually a quite faster alternate, but at a higher cost. You will have to buy two bluetooth adapters (there are many types including USB, PCI and PCMIA cards). A USB bluetooth adapter in ma country normally costs $30. But you will be able to create a wireless LAN between two computers called "Personal Ara Network" and use it to two-player games over LAN. Windows XP with service pack 2 configures this Connection autiomatically. If u don't have Service Pack 2 downloadit from:

http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/sp2/default.mspx

Preferrence:

1. If u want to tranfer files to another computer outside your house, better buy a USB Flash Stick.

2. If u only want to transfer files between the two computers at home, better get the bluetooth adapter.

USB key is the best option as it can hold a lot of information (your old PC will have USB ports if made in 2001) plus they are useful in the future and makes floppy drives redundant.

Make sure you get a key that will work on both USB 1 and 2 (1 is older so may be on your old PC) also if your old PC is not on windows XP then make sure the key works on its operating system. I had this problem when transfernig files from my mother in-law's old PC to her new Dell. What I did instead was use a digital camera, I plugged it in, installed it on both PCs, then saved the files onto the camera's 512k memory card.

Other options:

1) Set up a network between PCs,

2) email your files to yourself from the old PC and open the email on your new PC.

3) Buy software that does it for you (rubbish in my opinion)

Hope this helps.

hi dude,, better to opt for USB drive.. it is available from 128Mb to 1GB(dont go more than that).. it costs around 2500/- for 1GB...and 512Mb for 1800/-.... the other thing from where u can transfer all ur docs is through if ur pcs are network connected.. but it is wate if only two cpcs are there!! USBs has gained much popularity these days!! and now prices are also shoot down....

I think you can transfer information by "Hard to Hard" method.

from old hard to the new one. maybe you can not do it yourself but can help someone do it for you. (with hardware knowlage).
