Question:
I have 256 MB ram and a 2.29 GHZ processor. Will increasing memory increase speed on this machine?

It is an HP pavilion 515n, and I found a 512 MB memory card that I can buy and add. Will it make a difference? I have heard that the memory I have is sufficient and more won't help.

The memory you have is not sufficient if you have Win XP.

If you have integrated video on your computer and not a video card you have less than 200MB which is just sad. Memory is dirt cheap for 512MB do yourself a favor and get it.

It certainly will help. If you are just planning to write a few letters and use excel etc then may be no. However, if you want to play games , watch DVDs, use graphic applications then certainly upgrade the memory.

Sometimes when using Word and Excel you may notice the difference with more memory.

I assume the computer has a AGP/PCI graphics card and not integrated on the motherboard. If it is integrated then definitely install more RAM, since the system shares the memory for graphice.

Increasing RAM is one of the cheapest ways to speed up your computer. If you can then add as much memory as your motherboard can support. I did that to mine, and it works loads better now.

Just make sure that the memory you put in is compatible with the motherboard.

256Mb RAM is NOT very much these days, especially (as previously said) if you are running XP, or if you have integrated graphics on your motherboard.

Don't get me wrong here, 256MB IS enough to run your computer, but it's not exactly fast compared to most computers these days. New ones will generally start off with a minimum of 512MB.

Yes it will. You will not see a significant increase in speed but it will defiantly help.

256MB RAM is just the start, upgrade your ram.

Bill Gates once said "no one would ever need anything more than 64MB of RAM for home use" then he brings out XP
