Short version: I play WoW on a laptop, and my average FPS is about 12-17. I want a cheap but good quality CPU that can handle WoW smoothly and effectively, as well as some basic video editing.

Long version:
I'm building a budget gaming computer for playing WoW on medium-low settings so I can finally get at least 40 fps. I know a CPU can make or break a gaming computer (my current laptop has 3 gb RAM, windows 7, and a gig of video memory but an amd sempron single core 2.10 CPU, meaning my ram is fine but my cpu gets eaten up from just watching movies, so my average FPS while soloing is 20 FPS, in Orgrimmar on a saturday about 7-8 FPS.)

I want to keep the CPU under $100 if possible, but I'm willing to go for $125 if I really must.

For gaming, you need high clock speed and lots of cache.

Multiple cores (more than two) is desirable for other applications, like video editing in particular.

But on your budget, you're going to have to make a compromise somehow.

Based on your main use of gaming, I'd suggest:

Which has a high clock speed and lots of cache, which means it's going to be a great gaming CPU. While this is only a dual core CPU, it will still handle basic video editing just fine.

If you could spend a little more, you could go for a triple or quad core processor. BUT, you'd have to be careful not to sacrifice clock speed or cache for adding another core or two. So keeping clock speed and cache high while adding extra cores quickly pushes most CPUs out of your price range (way out). That's why I think the one I linked to is the best choice for you.

Best way to handle this is go into or call up a couple of your local computer stores and ask some of the nerd tech guys for their opinion on a couple of CPUs. Once you have a couple specific names don't pay retail for it, I recommend you use this free web app, Basically it does a search threw all the top online stores for you and brings up the cheapest price, watch the 1min video when you open it up to know what I'm talking about and how to search with it. Might help to check it daily too ;)

Enjoy ;)

Try changing the price to around $~150-200, and get an AMD Phenom II x6 1055T or 1090T. They're the best budget CPU. Otherwise, try a Phenom II x4. Intel is getting a bit too expensive nowadays, so you should keep with AMD.

this should do it.

but if you can stretch to $200, you can get a 6 core AMD.
