have you had the computer cleaned.

clean the inside and then clean the bugs in the system. you have 2 problems one is that it my need some cleaning. computers need air flow and with out it is gets choaked up. it works harder so when the CPU gets hot the fan has to spin faster in order to keep it cool so it does not burn out. and number 2 when you have a lot of things runnung in the background it tends to make the CPU work harder and also heat up which means faster fan speeds so clean out the bug and also che to see if you have more than 35 processes running. to do this just control, alt and delete and go to processes and it should be at the bottom left corner. if it has 38 to 40.. then it need to be clean. so get Adaware from download.com and install the free adware removal tool to get rid of pesky bugs.

Thanks for Asking and I hope this works for you.

The sound you are referring to is likely the internal fans kicking on. When the processor is being used heavily they will turn on to try to relieve some of the heat that builds up.

I Would suggest also trying to get a good spywear removal program and a firewall. Spywear is especially common on MP3 websites. When these download to your computer invisibly, they take up extra processor power. and are always running so they always draining your PC's power.

For a quick-ish fix, it might help to temporarily take the side of the case off (if you can). This will also help keeping your computer cool and hopefully keep the fans from being such an annoyance. If the fan is indeed the noise.

I just Googled that model to see if I could find a picture of it. I found a review of it that indicated that the hard drive was noisy due to air slots in the side of the case. You might want to go to a computer repair shop and see if they can swap out your hard drive for something a little quieter. They can probably copy the data from your current drive to your new one if you ask them to. It just comes down to how much you want to pay them.

You also might try making a little noise of your own with Compaq. If they've gotten enough complaints, they might have come up with a solution and issued a recall. Either that, or if you make a big enough stink, they might agree to pay all or part of the retro-fitting costs you incur with your local computer repair shop.

Best of luck!

you should probably open the side panel and determine where the noise is coming from. It sounds like loud fans to me but it could be your DVD/CD drives or your hard drives.

If it's the fans, the the system or cpu is getting to hot. DVD and CD drives are just nearly always loud. If its your hard drive, it might be failing and I would be doing some serious diagnosing right about now.

Unless if it's cpu overheating due to poor air flow, your probably gonna have to dish out some cash for some upgrades.

It sounds like there are too many things running at one time and it may be overheating. Can you leave some more info about your computer, like what memory is on it or even if it's a desktop or laptop.
